Great Beginners Book

This book is very informative, well writen, and basic for new students of kabbalah and individuals interested in the subject. Kabbalah is a difficult topic to understand and learn. The author did a wonderful job by making it kabbalah easy to understand. I have read over 20 kabbalah books and would sometime have questions about the books I have read. I did not have that issue when i read this book, my questions were answered.

I also love the fact the author teaches you how to pronounce many of the jewish words. I will now pronounce the words correctly with the group of students I study kabbalah with.

As a kabbalah student I now understand the Tree of Life (Ten Sefirot) more from the book. I finally learned how to connect to it and the meaning about each sefirot.

I highly recommened this book, add it to your shopping cart right now. :)

Terrific

Not only does this book cover the basics of traditional Kabbalah, it explains meanings, has pronounciations, includes a few graphics and is nicely organized. It also delves slightly into the major branches of Judaism if one is unfamiliar, and shows how it's impossible to take the Torah away from Kabbalah and still find what you are seeking spiritually.

Torah and Kabbalah and Judaism go together. You can learn things from Kabbalah that might help you in your life, but you can't expect to live a lifestyle based on Jewish teachings if you're not living in accordance with Torah.

Great Insight

I bought this book for my mother a few months after she lost my sister to cancer. She couldent comprehend how this can happen to such a young person in life, especially her daughter. Naturally, she was really depressed and this book really helped her recover. She constantley talks about this book and how much it helps her understand why things like this happen in life. Her outlook on life has changed for the better. This is the best gift I could have given her.

About the Author
Danielle Vega spent her childhood hiding under the covers while her mother retold tales from the pages of Stephen King novels instead of reading bedtime stories about princesses and dwarves like a normal parent. Now an adult, she can count on one hand the number of times in her life she's been truly afraid. Danielle has won numerous awards for her fiction and nonfiction, and earned a 2009 Pushcart Prize nomination for her short story “Drive.” She is also the author of Survive the Night.

The ending should die in a fire

Oh good lord, this novel. It made me feel so many things and bamboozled me so well at the end that the only reason I didn’t start stomping around and cursing is the fact I was at my ailing grandmother’s house at the time and I’m pretty sure my language would have sent her right to the afterlife. I wanted some YA horror in my life and that’s exactly what I got: some YA horror that bends the mind, gives you chills, and makes you angry. A little too angry, methinks.

One thing I really appreciate about the novel is its diversity. In this core group of five major female characters, two are something other than white (our narrator Sofia is Mexican and her new friend Grace is black). I’m not particularly fond of how Grace is described because you should never say a character has chocolate skin, but baby steps! Not good ones, but still! The group itself is pretty wild: Sofia the new girl trying to fit in with these girls who adopted her, Grace the wild card who wavers but generally falls in with the leaders, Alexis the follower, and Riley the leader. Then there’s their target: rebellious Brooklyn, former member of the group. Though not deeply characterized, watching these five fall apart in varying degrees is almost fun.

Perhaps the most irritating part of the novel is how it so completely fits the mold of horror and makes all the obvious mistakes. Making a plan to help Brooklyn escape? Oh, stab her in the leg even though injuring the leg is exactly what police officers and others are taught to do to keep someone from going anywhere! Going to investigate some suspicious noises and approaching it like you would a rabid dog or wild animal (almost exact words)? Don’t bother grabbing a weapon because it’s not like you’ll need it. I swear, common sense is the real enemy in horror media. Also, inconsistencies. One second, Sofia says enough of a characters finger was cut off that it rolls off a Bible and makes noise when it falls; other times, Sofia swears just a millimeter got cut off.

But if I put my rage aside, this is a pretty darn good horror novel. I had to split my reading into two sittings, but someone else could definitely read the entire novel in one sitting if they had the time to. I just wish it ventured out a little more. It’s not slasher horror with Freddy or Jason, nor is it like Carrie or the other five female-led horror movies in existence, but it doesn’t mess too much with the formula of general horror.

The ending. That ending is the source of so much of my confusion and rage and everything. One way or another, it’s going to get a reaction out of you because you’re either going to love getting your mind put through a paper shredder or you’re going to be angry at it screwing with you and saying what it does with its choices.

The book is currently being adapted for film–no surprise there since The Merciless is a product of Alloy Entertainment and whether it’s Pretty Little Liars or Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, their products make their way to movies and television easily–and it would make for a terrifying horror movie if it actually got that far. If you’re looking for some good YA horror that makes you wonder if there are really supernatural things going on, you’ll probably want this.

Very - Suspenseful

I loved this book. It's action packed and it keeps you reading from start to finish.

For me - this most important thing to look for in a book is great characters, and a great plot - and the Merciless didn't disappoint. I also read most of it in 1 sitting - because I couldn't stop.

I heard they might make a movie out of it? Keeping my fingers crossed...

Oh. My. Gosh. This book was pretty freaky. By the end I was just freaked out, haha. This whole book is pretty gruesome, so yeah. If you're looking for a horror book in the young adult genre this is a good one. I was contemplating between 4 and 5 stars because I really liked this book - but I think I'll go with a 4/4.5 stars. It's truly a fast-paced, creepy book. I didn't want to put it down!

I'd also like to add that while the characters were pretty crazy and not great; and some stuff in this book were predictable, this is a book good for reading for the entertainment. So whiles it's not beautifully written and deep, it does deliver on some gruesome, thrilling plot.

I don't really know what else to say. This book was just great in a weird way, haha. I'm truly amazed at how the author came up with all the ideas for this. Definitely recommend.

EDIT: Okay so I just saw that this says "The Merciless #1" so is this going to be a series? If so then I wish this was a stand alone because I don't really know how I feel about sequels. But I'm open-minded so if this does become a series then I'll try out the next books!

Too Academic

This book is for academia and not for any type of practical estimating. Heavy into the take-off and weak in pulling together an actual estimate. Problems are redudant and tedious. Very weak in Mechanical, Electrical or Plumbinng divisions

Good Estimating Database Template

I found this book to be very good and detailed. I note with interest that most of the reviews were before the current edition in 2011. I am unsure whether this had anything to do with the negative reviews.

Looking forward to the next one!

This story picks up where the last one left off. Aden is in labor and the alphas are all trying to get through it in their own ways. Unfortunately, Blaze is having a bit of a difficult time still, especially once the baby arrives. Seems this is something out of his control that he is frantic about his ability to protect, etc. So, there is quite a bit of tension among the foursome even during this joyous time.

Even more unfortunate is how distracted Blaze with everything going on. And with the mad scientist still on the loose, things go bad rather quickly. Madden is now obsessed with male pregnancy and sees dollar signs if he can recreate the ability in humans. He, of course, must get the secret from Blaze, whom he believes is the key element to making it happen. He uses horrific methods in attempting to gain such information, and it is mostly Blaze who suffers at his hands this time around.

At the same time, there is also an outside group claiming responsibility for attacks that is putting the plan of integrating the wolves and humans at great risk. So, there are quite a few twists in this story as well.

But, the main focus is, of course, on the mates, Orion’s Circle. I won’t give away the biggest twist of all here, but suffice to say, it’s a heartbreaker I did not see coming. I was pretty upset about it, but I really like how Ms. Sue played everything out in the end.

This is a really enjoyable shifter series that is refreshingly different and interesting. There are a number of dynamics that are not the same old, same old which really makes this story unique. I love these characters and am really looking forward to seeing what more is in store for them as they work to accomplish the goals they were put together to reach.

Complex characterizations and a Great plot

Seven months have passed since we last checked in on Aden, Blaze, Connor and Darric. The Orion’s Circle is expecting their first child. The second book of the Sirius Wolves series opens up with the Aden in the process of delivering their bundle of joy. When the child comes, Blaze is surprised that they have a daughter instead of the son that he thought they would have.

Shortly after Beth is born, a new terrorist group is trying to destroy the joint wolf human military training that Blaze and Senator Mason have been trying to set up. Their first attempt, kill the Joint Chiefs in Washington DC, fails. Their second attempt takes place in Denver. This time the group succeeds. The group Winter Circle claims responsibility. Blaze knows that the terrorist group is named in such a way to implicate the werewolves. He hopes that it is just a coincidence that a human group would choose that name.

Meanwhile, Doctor Madden is back in town. He has gotten information that the Orion’s Circle has had a child and wants to try to duplicate the results in humans. He first kidnaps Blaze thinking he is the reason for the child. When Blaze is unwilling to divulge any information, Madden then sets about kidnapping Aden to give Blaze incentive to talk. When Connor and Darric arrive to rescue their mates, all hell breaks out.

I enjoyed this story. Blaze is complex character. He is the Supreme Alpha but cannot seem to do anything right when it comes to Aden. What Blaze sees as protecting his mates, Aden sees it as overbearing sometimes. Blaze’s idea about hiring a couple of nannies is a prime example. Darric and Connor are there to try to explain to their mates what the others motivations are. With the plot twists that occur in this book, it will be interesting to see how this relationship moves forward in following books.

The cover design by 3 Rusted Spoons shows the Omega Aden shirtless in jeans standing in front of a starry sky. It is a decent cover for the story.

Well done!

I write this review with a very bittersweet heart. If you've never read anything by Victoria Sue, then you simply must do so. She is talented at weaving a layered world that has realistic interactions and emotions that will make you feel as if you are in the room with the characters. Her characters are complex, emotional, and frustratingly endearing. I've enjoyed the Orion's Circle series immensely. The world that Ms. Sue writes about is fascinating and will draw you in. You will find yourself at the end of the story before you realize you've read it all in one sitting, and often blown away by the twists and turns!

Having said that, I will warn you that this series is not for the faint of heart. If you are a fan of happily ever afters, then proceed with an open mind about what that means. It's difficult for me to write this review, because I find myself profoundly affected by the end of the second book, in a way that I never anticipated. And while the story is masterfully written, I'm not certain I will continue with this particular series. Having said that, I'm grateful Ms. Sue has other series she has written that I fully intend to read! Give it a try - you will not be disappointed, no matter where the story leaves you.

This book was written with the belief that teaching developmental composition with literature offers exciting possibilities for both students and instructors. Featuring poetry and short stories in addition to essays, DIGGING IN will engage your students like no other text. An introductory chapter on reading literature and a glossary following the last chapter give students all the resources they need to be successful.

Most of the readings are contemporary, and the topics cover a broad extent of human experience. The chapters—Family History. GrowingUp/Growing Old, Learning and Teaching, The Emotional Side, Work and Dreams, and Issues/Positions—offer instructors an opportunity to teach within a theme.

For each of the over 60 selections, the author has included:

A short biography of the author.
A Before Reading prompt. This prompt will start students thinking about the topic of the piece before they encounter the author's treatment of that topic, engaging them more thoroughly in the work.
To Understand questions. Some of these test a student's basic understanding of what has happened in the piece. Others require more critical thinking and ask students to ponder particular parts or aspects of the work.
To Write questions. These ask for personal responses to the literature.

If you are holding this book in your hands, you are at least considering the notion of teaching your developmental composition class with literary selections. I applaud you for this. For years I've been asking myself why we don't assign literature to our students who are just beginning to develop their writing skills. So much accessible and enjoyable fiction, poetry, and nonfiction could be offered to our students, yet traditionally we have taught our classes with the same kinds of readings they have been exposed to over and over again—articles about current issues. I don't intend to criticize that approach; one can certainly teach reading and writing skills successfully with that kind of text. However, I hope you agree that teaching developmental composition with literature offers exciting possibilities for both students and instructors.

What You Will Find in this Book

This book starts with an introduction to the three genres of literature I've included: poetry, short stories, and essays. (Certainly, drama is another important literary genre, but for space considerations, I have not included any plays.) This chapter gives students a brief introduction to reading literature with a focus on some essential questions they can ask of each genre. I offer the basic vocabulary for discussing literature but keep it deliberately simple and not focused on memorizing terms or concepts. More than anything, this chapter is aimed at helping students feel comfortable with literature.

The main feature of this book is the literature itself. I've included poems, short stories, and essays. You will find that most of the selections are accessible for students who are still developing their reading skills. A range exists, of course. Pieces like Tim O'Brien's "Beginning" might challenge students a bit, but I have taken care to choose selections that are generally comprehensible on a first read. Most of the readings are contemporary, by well-known and lesser-known writers, and the topics cover a broad extent of human experience. The chapters—Family History, Growing Up/Growing Old, Learning and Teaching, The Emotional Side, Work and Dreams, and Issues/Positions—offer instructors an opportunity to teach within a theme, although you will find that an individual selection in one chapter might easily have been placed in another.

Each chapter starts with a brief introduction to its theme and a preview of the literary selections. Students can read this to get a general sense of what they can look forward to in the chapter. Each selection of literature is preceded by a short biography of the author as well as a Before Reading prompt. This prompt will start students thinking about the topic of the piece before they encounter the author's treatment of that topic, engaging them more thoroughly in the work. Following each poem, story, or essay, students will find To Understand and To Write questions. Some of the To Understand questions test a student's basic understanding of what has happened in the piece. Others require more critical thinking and ask students to ponder particular parts or aspects of the work. The To Write questions ask for personal responses to the literature. These can be used in several ways. You can assign them as take-home journal assignments, or you might use them as quick-write prompts at the beginning of class. Either way, students will be more prepared for class discussion if they have done some writing in response to the literature. These prompts might also be used for formal writing assignments, depending on the goals you have for those assignments. In general, the language in both the To Understand and To Write questions is not the language of literary analysis nor of literary criticism. Students should be able to read the work and answer the questions without being intimidated by terminology or theory.

At the end of each chapter, you will find a list of Ideas for Writing. These writing prompts address the general theme of the chapter (though not one particular work) and are meant to offer opportunities for formal paper writing. You might have students choose one assignment (or you might choose one for them) after they have read all or some of the literary selections for that chapter. I've phrased these prompts so you can use them for paragraph or essay assignments, depending on the direction of your class.

A glossary following the last chapter is a final feature of this book. Although the literature in this text is quite accessible, you may find it helpful to direct your students to the glossary for words that are not familiar to them. Overall, I hope this book provides both students and instructors an enjoyable classroom experience.

About the Author
Roger Wolter has 29 years of experience in various aspects of the computer industry, including jobs at Unisys, Infospan, Fourth Shift, and the last seven years as a Program Manager at Microsoft. His projects at Microsoft include COM+, SQLXML, the Soap Toolkit, SQL Server Service Broker, and SQL Server Express. His interest in Service Broker was sparked by a messaging-based manufacturing system he worked on in a previous life. He’s currently splitting his time between the Service Broker and SQL Server Express projects in SQL Server 2005.

Concisely comprehensive

Roger Wolter has written several major articles on SQL Server 2005 Service Broker, and so, when I ordered this book I wondered if it would be a re-working on those articles-NOT!

This book is completely new material and it is great. Mr Wolter finds the balance of being able to write real prose that is not overly chatty. It is dense and to the point, and yet readable.

When the subject comes to Service Oriented Architecture, Roger resists the urge, apparent in other authors, to write hundreds of pages of abstract statements. Instead he is able to explain his views on SOA in a matter of a couple dozens pages, which he illustrates with concrete code. Oh yes the code! The book is filled with code examples that have the look and feel of real production code-which is regrettably rare in computer books.

The code provides good examples of SQL Server 2005 new TRY CATCH syntax and the WAITFOR command.

My only quibble is that keywords in the code are inconsistently cased, but that doesn't dimminish my rating of five stars

Service Broker is a remarkable product. It is an asynchronous transactional messaging system that is nevertheless still SQL!

If you feel too busy to learn it, get this book. Roger wastes very few words in bringing you up to speed and beyond.

Service Broker is part of Microsoft's continuing effort to expand into the enterprise software arena. It works in conjunction with SQL Server 2005 and provides for the asynchronous operation of the database and input/output. That is, you can input data intended for storage in the database and have Service Broker take that data immediately, freeing up the input screen while it proceeds to do the actual insertion.

The Rational Guide series of books are comprehensive, inexpensive and rather small. This book really has less than 200 pages of real live text. It can be read quickly and gives an excellent overview of the software as well as enough depth to be able to use it in real applications. It does presume that the reader have some experience with SQL Server and with the TSQL programming language.

The author of the book is the program manager for SQL Server Service Broker.

Introducing a New Class of Operations

Service Broker is a rather new concept in database development that Microsoft is building into SQL Server 2005. It basically allows the creation of a whole new class of database operations that can be written in TSQL and which run asynchronously as part of a queued system.

This concept adds a whole new dimension to SQL programming. It is an enormous extension to the standard capabilities of the language. As an example, a web server running an order entry application takes an order and puts it into the database. It quickly releases the web server to allow it to handle the next order. At the same time it puts information into a que to allow the back end processing of the order, inventory control, shipping, etc. to take place on a basis of operating when resources either on the database machine handing the order entry or an entirely different machine.

This book is written by the Group Program Manager for SQL Server Service Broker. It is the first book available and is based on the Beta release of the software. As I write this, the third Beta for SQL Server 2005 is available on the Microsoft web site. This Beta includes Service Broker as described in this book.

I really enjoy this book even though it is a quick read. The points are very clear and concise, plus I appreciate the addition of example worksheets to follow in applying the books concepts. I highly recommend this book and cannot argue with the price.

This book might be good for a middle school student.

I found neither new information in this book nor any useful insights.
To explain the level of discourse in this book, I'll employ an analogy:
When I first learned about accounting and finance we used a lemonade stand example to explain COGS, SG&A, working capital, etc.
If this book took a similar parable approach, it probably would have been more helpful (but still only at the level of an extreme novice). Instead the book lists suggestions for "strategic thinking" in 7 chapters:
1. See the big picture
2. Articulate Strategic objectives
3. Identify relationships, patterns, and trends
4. get creative
5. Analyze information
6. Prioritize your actions
7. Make trade-offs

If concepts such as
estimating how long parts of a project will take, find potential bottlenecks, make sure you have all the relevant information, think creatively before settling on a course of action
are new to you, maybe you will find this book worthwhile.

Great book, very useful, this is my go to book

This book is info packed, every single detail you can think of for starting your own business, not as literature heavy as for example judy allens books. Very open and could apply to any kind of event planning business not just focused on one type of event like special events, corporate events or wedding planning. It has a step by step guide on things you will need to do, this book has been my bible for starting my business and I have ordered the 3rd edition as I already had the 2nd edition. Hands down the best book for starting your own event planning business (and I have ordered several books on this topic).

Very Basic with the Occasional Insight

I'm planning to launch an event design business in 2014, so I've read lots of articles, taken a few classes, and used several business planning books. I was particularly excited about this book because it seemed so specific to what I'm doing. I read straight through the entire book in a day. Many times I found the advice to be so basic and watered down that it was useless. The chapter on writing a business plan was so rudimentary it would more helpful as a sentence that reads, "To write a business plan consult a book on writing business plans." Oddly, the chapter gives extremely specific numbers regarding the plan saying something like it should take 300 hours to write and be 25 pages long, which I find a little bizarre given that the book is geared toward a wide audience and that the length and time spent on a business plan will depend on the size and type of business as well as the type of funding that will be sought, if any.

I've already taken on a number of expenses mentioned in the book, and found that every single dollar estimate given was completely inaccurate. My purchases have been small so far, so I'm not sure how accurate the larger dollar figures are.

The worksheets included in the book are sparse and extremely basic. I think they're a good start or exercise for someone who is just beginning to research the topic, but they're not actually functional.

In terms of writing style, I felt like the chapter introductions and conclusions were awkward and sometimes abrupt. There are no summaries at the end of each chapter, even in the form of a single sentence. Many times I hadn't realized that the chapter had ended until I saw the headline that a new one was beginning. I also found the book repetitive in many places. At times I felt that the same idea was bullet pointed 2 or 3 times in a single list with little variation in wording. I found these same repetitive bullet points presented over and over throughout the book as new ideas.

The other problem I have with the book is that it seems outdated in places. It's almost like the editors just added a few updated details to bring it up to date, but neglected to take out or update any outdated information. The number of times using the phone book or a pager is mentioned is concerning.

What I did find extremely helpful and insightful about this book was the information given on insurance, proposals and agreements, pricing, and cash flow. This information is very specific to the industry, and I felt it helped answer some of the lingering questions I've not been able to get answered with more general business planning books.

The book is geared toward a very general audience that includes stay-at-home moms interested in throwing children's birthday parties as a source of supplemental income to jet-setting corporate event planners, and everything in between. I think it's definitely a good place to start, and a good resource to keep on hand, but if you're serious about starting your own business you'll have to use more in-depth resources for things like writing a business plan.

I would suggest this book for anyone who is looking to start a business in event planning; however if you want to know more about events and establishing a career and what that entails, this might not be the book for you...

For those of us interested in the history and refurbishing or repurposing of vintage industrial objects, Brigitte Durieux has produced two volumes that act as an encyclopedia of gorgeous visual images and comprehensive commentary that define industrial chic in the early 21st Century. Bravo!
