Second Edition is Even Better!

A great update to the first edition, which was a classic. This belongs in the reference library of every web and user experience designer. Although Dan Brown clearly wrote this with web designers from the IA/UX persuasion in mind, there's guidance throughout that can be leveraged by those from other design and creative disciplines that need to communicate their work to various audiences.

For me, that's the secret sauce that makes this book so valuable. Besides the excellent information (and more illustrations) on structure and tools for creating effective communications, it provides guidance on when and how to frame and use different types of communications (deliverables or diagrams) to facilitate discussions, work with stakeholders, clients, and other contributors, and enable projects to move forward. If you work with clients or stakeholders (what designer doesn't?), this book will help you be more successful.

Good content lost in poor style

As some other reviewers have pointed out this book is best suited to those who are interested in managing the project as well as actually doing the design job. I can see how from his perspective this book does not agree with some designers, who care very little about how to set-up meetings to discuss design deliverables, and just want get their primary job done. However, as a product manager, I found this part interesting.
What is really bothering me is the style of the author's writing. Overcomplicated long phrasings mixed with out-of-place comments (or are those jokes?) about author's hobbies... sometimes I feel I am reading a blog not a book, it's a waste of time.
I would suggest that for the 3rd edition the author teams up with a good editor who would help him phrase his thoughts more laconically, and remove all the noise from the book. Until then, if you are considering buying this book, I suggest you keep looking (unless you have lots of free time).

Beautiful in all ways!

OK, I'm biased, but I love this book. Dan did such a great job creating a book that you actually WANT to come back to time and again. If you're like me, you probably have lots of books on your shelf, and they look nice up there, but you may not take them down and actually use them very much. This book might not look as nice on your shelf, because you'll use it so much that it will get beat up. Which is a good thing.

The 1990s have witnessed a sort of renaissance in cave art, thanks to new discoveries from the south of France. Previously, the oldest examples of human art were thought to have been painted 15,000 years ago. When these three spelunkers-turned-authors happened upon the Chauvet cave (named after one of them), however, they visited an underground art gallery that had been closed for 30,000 years. It's still inaccessible today, except to specialists. But this wonderful book of pictures and text allows virtual tourists to appreciate the creations of our remotest ancestors. This may be primitive art in the literal sense of the term, but it's remarkably sophisticated.

The prehistoric paintings recently discovered in Chauvet Cave are twice as old as the paintings of Lascaux, and show both considerable strength and beauty. The discoverers of Chauvet Cave are well known and respected speleologists who maintained impeccable records while exploring their find. It is they who tell the story of their explorations. In many ways this book is reminiscent of Carter's writings about Tutankhamen's tomb with a similar sense of awe at the millennia that had passed between the fabrication of the work and the modern discovery. The text is good, with a clean, easy-to-read translation by prehistorian Paul G. Bahn, who also provides the foreword. It is the photographs, however, that capture the real power and beauty of these paintings, bringing the humanity of their Stone Age artists close to home. Before there were artists at the famous caves of Lascaux, there were artists at Chauvet and Cosquer--two caves whose paleolithic drawings remained undiscovered until the 1990s. Chauvet, in southeast France, is the most ancient; some of its vivid panels of horses, lions, and rhinoceri (beautifully reproduced here) are as much as 31,000 years old. Cosquer, buried for 20 centuries beneath the Mediterranean, was serendipitously discovered by a diver for whom the cave is named. Some of the Cosquer drawings date back 27,000 years. First Book Published in English an the Cave Discoverer is the Author

This book was the first in English to come out on this amazing cave. The author is the discoverer of the cave: Jean-Marie Chauvet. Because of that, the cave was named for him. He also was in charge of the team responsible for the analysis of the find. Since the book was published in the early days of analyzing the cave, the text on the contents of the cave is not as detailed (or complete) as it might be for a similar book published at a later date. Still, it is one of the best books available on this cave in English. Highly recommended!

The entrance to the Chauvet cave was sealed off in a landslide 23,000 years ago, creating a time capsule from the Upper Paleolithic period (the Ice Age). A time when Europe was covered with huge glaciers, the sea level was hundreds of feet lower than what it is today, the population was only a few thousand people (including Neanderthals), and long extinct animal (like wooly mammoths, cave bears, cave lions, etc.) roamed Europe. The cave is so well preserved that the hundreds of drawings and paintings (made during several periods thousands of years apart) appear as fresh as if they were made only recently.

worth getting

This book is filled with beautiful photographs of the oldest known cave art in the world. Simply flipping through and examining these paintings is an amazing experience. However, the text is a little less than breathtaking, providing little information for even those of us who know very little about cave art. It is little more than a description of how the discoverers felt upon finding this cave. Nonetheless, this book is worth purchasing, if only for the spectacular photos.

Beautiful Photographs of the oldest cave art known.

The Chauvet Cave in Southern France has caused art history to have to be re-written. This brilliantly painted cave- far older than Lascaux and others in the region is exhibited beautifully here in a lush "Coffee Table" book form. These are well reproduced photographs of superb art work. Some of the animals drawn by the ancient artists have multiple legs- suggesting motion. Also surprising is the attempt at a realistic perspective in some of the works. As excellent as the book is in its photographs it is short on explaining the many questions this art brings to mind such as - "What function did this art serve." Perhaps this is for the best since the answers may always remain in the realm of speculation. This book is the only way to see this great art- as the cave will probably never be opened to general public visitation.

David Harlan writes in The Degradation of American History that "during the last thirty years history as ethical judgment has been driven into exile by history as contextual reconstruction." He charges that the relativistic quest for a value-free history--one that ignores what people in the past thought about their lives and times--is a false exercise in "history as objective truth." He is no kinder to postfeminist and multiculturalist schools of thought, proposing instead a kind of new traditionalism that recognizes the values that emerge from historical study. This is all fiery stuff, and sure to excite controversy among professional historians, Harlan's primary audience. Lay readers should find Harlan's book interesting, too, if for no other reason than that it draws clear lines of battle in a murky struggle.

The profession of history is in crisis in a postmodern world of multiple perspectives and information overkill, argues Harlan (history, California Polytechnic Univ., San Luis Obispo): "The earlier idea of American history as a great conversation [has] all but disappeared, replaced by tightly focused and rigorously contextualized minihistories." Harlan lucidly outlines the current status of historiography, particularly American, in light of the persistent influence of post-structuralism. Leading historians, such as Joyce Appleby, would do well to learn from his observations, suggestions, and style.

Physicist and science writer Bruce Schechter's biography of legendary Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdös is an engaging portrait, warm and intimate, bringing this strange, happy man to life. Schechter's focus is quite a bit tighter, and more traditionally biographical, than Paul Hoffman's in The Man Who Loved Only Numbers. Here, we get to see Erdös's brief childhood transform quickly into a carefree adolescence of solving difficult math problems with his circle of brilliant friends--uniquely encouraged by a country that valued the contributions of mathematics in a way that has never been equaled. Fleeing the Holocaust, Erdös never settled down, instead traveling from place to place, showing up on the doorsteps of other mathematicians with his few possessions and an open mind. During his career, Erdös published more papers than any other mathematician in history. Most of the papers were collaborations:

Schechter's biography of mathematical wizard Paul Erdos, who died in 1996, follows closely on the publication of one by Paul Hoffman (The Man Who Loved Only Numbers, Forecasts, June 8). Curiously, both biographers were associated with Discover magazine?Schechter as a staff writer and Hoffman as editor-in-chief. Like Hoffman, Schechter adeptly portrays both the quirky Erdos and his daimon, the pure, abstract universe of numbers. Schechter's explanations of number theory are better suited than Hoffman's for readers not in technical or scientific professions. He doesn't delve into subjects like Ramsey theory in quite the detail that Hoffman does, and his digressions tend to be more relevant to Erdos's life. Hoffman, for example, goes into the story of Fermat's last theorem, which played almost no role in Erdos's career. And Schechter seems more evenhanded in his account of Erdos's controversial contribution to the solution of the Prime Number Theorem. Although Schechter didn't know Erdos personally, as Hoffman did, and although his account lacks some of the other's humanizing vignettes, readers will be engrossed by his well-crafted chronicle of the eccentric Hungarian and of the mathematical worlds he traversed for eight decades.

To prove and conjecture: great book about beautiful mind and sad life.

Shurik, a friend of mine I used to share student dorm with, was a mathematician. Algebraist, to be precise. We talked a lot discussing multitude of topics, not necessarily mathematical ones. In those days hot water was customarily shut off across campus during summer season so students could prepare for exams without such a distraction as hot showers. That fact prompted me to comment that our lifestyle, while notably different, still somewhat resembles what a lifestyle in Upper Paleolithic might look like. Shurik was digesting my remark for a few moments with the stamp of intense thinking on his face (his Calculus test was next day), then said excitedly:

- Dude, you know why there was no hot water in Upper Paleolithic? That's because the water pressure was not strong enough in the Lower Paleolithic!

That insignificant episode from my student years characterizes true mathematicians very eloquently. They are quite unusual breed of humankind with extraordinary abilities to locate not very obvious properties and relations in seemingly regular objects and notions. Having been exposed to interaction with mathematicians for sometime I, by the time the book of Mr. Schechter was read through, felt I knew Paul Erdos almost personally. Very light and elegant writing style of the author was a contributing factor as well.

Mathematicians rarely can be aggressive. Usually, they are very sensitive and kind people. In this regard the portrait of Paul Erdos by Mr. Schechter goes along quite naturally with my experience of dealing with them. At the same time that portrait leaves a very sad impression of the true inner nature of Erdos - depressingly lonely person, with no family and no home. The deep tragedy of the Erdos family with Paul's siblings gone by disease, father's suffering in Russian exile, terrible WWII ordeals - all that makes you wonder how Paul and his parents can continue "to prove and conjecture" so successfully under such horrendous circumstances? Author partly explains this phenomenon very brightly describing the scientific and especially educational traditions in Hungary before the war. Indeed, the density of incredible talents generated in this small central European country somewhat shocking. It underscores how important the role of truly good teacher in elementary school can be. Taking into account all that and also the fact that both parents of Erdos were superior math teachers in high school themselves a reader can see the roots of the enormous productivity of Erdos, who published more math papers in multiple branches of it than any other scientist in history. But it also can be a city of Budapest whose streets, as per Mr. Schechter, are very inviting for any kind or scientific reasoning - although not a scientist myself, I did experience the same when I was roaming with friends along Duna shores in Buda one summer.

The mathematical content of the book is very engaging for non-mathematicians. It is explained almost with no formulas but Mr. Schechter manages to convey the depth of the mathematical ideas very well without them. It is especially applicable to the chapter about prime numbers. The primes, although endless in the set of integers, do have very strange properties. Take the theorem proved by Chebychev first and re-proved by Erdos by elementary means - between N and 2N there is always a prime. At the same time we know that the intervals without primes can be as long as one would wish. At first glance two facts seems to contradict to each other but they do not. Facts like that are abundant in the Numbers Theory with most enigmatic one as a problem of primes distribution and Riemann function. Mr. Schechter does a good job providing historical background of the Numbers Theory, its evolution, contributions of Paul Erdos and controversy of Erdos and Selberg.

I have to admit the author did a brilliant homework researching all kinds of details pertinent to mathematics and its origins. I did enjoy pages about clay table Plimpton 322 with its incredible content of Pythagorean triplets as well as multitude of other stories like most bizarre "application" of Numbers Theory when close collaborator of Erdos avoided deportation to Gulag just because he happened to have his publication on the subject in Russian mathematical magazine with him. In this regard, the book of Mr. Schechter can be considered as not so much as biography of Paul Erdos but as biography of mathematics as a scientific discipline. Humor, albeit sometimes very dark (for example, about math students, who were "studying" Jordan theorem being confined to "inner area", id est being imprisoned) sparking the text regularly and appropriately.

Mathematics is somewhat similar to soccer. While everybody can perceive the beauty of ball handling by say Riquelme or Robinho, very few of us can do the same on the soccer field. In math, formulation of the conjecture can be deceptively simple and elegant, and most of us can understand it well. At the same time, it is very different story once you start thinking about trying to prove that conjecture. In many cases it might require years of learning and tons of exercises. But even that no guarantee to success. The inclination to a special way of thinking is required. In this regard, magic of Riquelme on the stadium is direct equivalent of wizardry of Erdos in Numbers Theory. The books similar to Mr. Schechter facilitate our comprehension of the conjecture beyond mere formulation, opening the curtain after which the proof is hidden.

On the other note, I can't stop thinking of what kind of future European science might have should its development was not brutally aborted by sad realities of Second World War. True, many of bright Hungarian (and other) minds escaped from the inferno of warfare and extermination campaigns; true, many of them intensified their research in military related directions and achieved significant results. Still so many perished needlessly making a good number of famous European scientific centers empty and forgotten for a very long time. It seems incredible that one person's paranoia can mercilessly terminate so much in such a short period of time. Let's us hope the future Erdoses will never be forced to travel so intensively against their wills even with theirs brains open so widely.

Fascinating biography with lucid cameos of math. topics

This beautiful book is an intellectually rich biography of one of the world's most prolific mathematicians. Amusingly, inoffensively and highly idiosyncratic, Erdos worked on hard problems in apparently simple fields, taking rather easily explained concepts and forging powerful new results and tools with a speed which astounded professional colleagues. Bruce Schechter does a magnificent job of clearly explaining what Erdos did and the many connections between his work and other areas of mathematics and, more generally, science. Through frequent digressions he paints both a humane portrait of a uniquely caring individual and a thumbnail sketch of western political oppression around the world during the first sixty years of this century.
This book also will introduce readers, in a gentle and interesting manner, to the world of numbers and mathematics. The nature of prime numbers and how they are distributed, famous conjectures such as Goldbach's, topics in graph theory and combinatorial mathematics, and more are made accessible to the reader. The account of the controversy surrounding the "elementary" proof of the Prime Number Theorem benefits from the author's access to newly available material, and will be of interest to both laypeople and mathematicians. Other topics, introduced through natural association with the subject at hand, include Godel's Theorem, Russell's paradox, the Monty Hall problem (made famous by Marilyn vos Savant), the nature of infinity, proving theorems by contradiction, and the normal distribution.
Though Erdos is known to many for his unusual life style and behavior, this book does not dwell on the bizarre but weaves such facets of his life into the more exciting mathematical development of the person. This biography ranks among the very best of the numerous works about mathematicians which I have read over the past 45 years. Arguably, more has been written about Erdos in the past decade or two than about any other mathematician. Despite this, Schechter's new contribution is an outstanding addition to the literature

The Best of Math Biography

It's a delicate balancing act when writing about genius, either giving way to a gossipy hero-worshiping mysticism or adhering so closely to the technical details that all but the those in that field are lost. This book succeeds in depicting the things that made Paul Erdos a publicly interesting figure, but also shows, rather then tells, how simple and brilliants his theorems and proofs could be. It's a quick read and difficult to resist trying variations on his graph theory problems!

Characters? Bad. Story? Good.

Decent novel. The characters aren't particularly likable (has "Michaels" ever even met a woman from Arkansas?) and there are a few technical mistakes involving which missiles are which, but the story is intriguing enough to make up for that. It has no ties to the game of the same name aside from a vaguely similar plot, but, unlike the game, the novel actually involves the program the franchise is named for. Plenty of action, suspense, surprises, some wonderful dogfights, and a clear setup for a sequel make this a must-read for anyone who's been keeping up with the other Ubisoft/Clancy franchises the mysterious pseudonym "Michaels" has been novelizing.

Greatt Dogfights, Poor Drama

Overall this was a decent book. Not the best, but good enough to keep my interest engaged. However, all of the characters in this story are very shallow. Relationships are seemingly focused only on lust and sex. And the time in between many of the scenes in this book jump ahead suddenly and unexpectedly. The best thing about the story were the detailed dogfights that take place up in the air between advanced aviation aircraft. I envisioned the flight scenes from the movie, "Top Gun" throughout this storyline as good pilot takes on bad pilot.

If you like a book with a fast read, shallow characters, and lots of adventure, then this book is good for you. Otherwise, save your money and stick with a real Tom Clancy novel instead.

HAWX is a misfire

HAWX is awful.

I'd read David Michaels' (A.K.A. Grant Blackwood) Ghost Recon and liked it enough to try more. It wasn't great, but for a book based on a game franchise, it did what I wanted. It was fast moving and the combat was very well done. When I heard Blackwood wrote novelizations of HAWX and EndWar, I picked them up. I decided to try HAWX first because, well, because I liked the cover better.

HAWX sounds promising: Former hot shot Air Force fighter pilot Troy Leonsch (I know, I couldn't pronounce it either. I called him 'Troy Lunch') signs up with private military contractor Firehawk and gets the action he misses and a hefty paycheck. But are PMCs a good idea? Troy isn't so sure. When the CIA asks Troy to help investigate Firehawk, he does.

Sounds great! But the book is full of problems. HAWX is very slow moving and even though it has a promising set-up, the book that was written feels padded and dull. For one thing, Firehawk doesn't appear until around page 150. The CIA? They don't show up until half way through the book. The action that carried Ghost Recon is here as well, but there is very little of it and it isn't really tied in to the story.

The rest of the book is made up of cheesy soap opera elements in Troy's romantic life. I mentioned that I enjoyed Ghost Recon. One thing that I had problems with was the characterizations, which were poor. I accepted them in that book because they came in small doses. In HAWX, about half of the book is made up of Troy's personal life.

Also, even though Blackwood writes in a very easy to read style which works for the books he is writing, here he tended to over-explain even simple things. I felt like he was talking down to me. At one point, he quotes Buzz Aldrin, and then explains who Buzz Aldrin is. Buzz Aldrin!

Finally, the third act is hare-brained and absurd. The idea of a PMC pulling off a coup against the U.S. is interesting, but here it is handled in such a half-baked manner I wondered if the author understood the way the government works. The plot point used to remove the President never takes into account that there is a Vice President or the Speaker of the House. I'm willing to accept some ridiculous stuff in my fiction, but please make it plausible.

As I read through the book I realized I didn't care about any of the characters or where the story was going. I finished the book only due to stupid, grim determination. Towards the end, I was angry at myself for sticking with the book, but I did.

Please understand that I'm not expecting Tolstoy when I read a book based on a Tom Clancy video game. I do expect a book that is fast paced, pulpy fun. The author of this book has proved he's up to the task in previous books. I will give EndWar a chance. Ghost Recon was enjoyable enough for me to give him a third try. But HAWX is a failure of a book in every way.

About the Author
Mario Asselin has served as an instructor at the Royal Military College of Canada's Mechanical Engineering Department since 1995. Before this he was a project manager for the integration of the Ground Collision Avoidance System. His experience also includes working on the CF188 as Avionics and Armament Project Officer, the Microwave Landing System, and the NAVSTAR/Global Positioning System. Mr. Asselin received his baccalaureate in Engineering in 1988 from the Royal Military College of Canada a nd a subsequent Master degree in Applied Science. He has authored many publications including the study guide, "Modern Aerodynamic Series--Aircraft Performance," and a technical paper on "Numerical Simulation of Ice Formation on Aircraft Wing in Flight."

A start for every aeronautics engineer student

This book is really a good reference for understanding the basics of aeronautics. It covers everything from aerodynamics to flight dynamics, stability and control, etc... Basically, after you read the book, you can know only a few parameters of a particular aircraft and then be able to deduct its aerodynamic characteristics, its optimal speed for maximal range, its flight ceiling, etc...
With the information that an aircraft manufacturer gives on its typical web page and the information contained in this book you can calculate enough to have a really good idea of a particular aircraft performance.
Plus, the book is clear and easy to read. I recommend it to every aeronautics student.

To deep information

It is a very interesting journey from the early days when gold was a symbol of power and was used solely as an ornament. Then appears the currency in Lydia and from that moment on gold is consolidating as Money back. But there comes a point in the historical narrative, just in time to enter the modern age, with the creation of the Bank of England, where the story becomes a general history book for economists. It is quite difficult to understand what is explained thereafter by the desire of the author to explain the specifics. But if you make an effort you can get the most important information and understand the milestones in the history of gold and its close relationship with the current economy.

Es un recorrido muy interesante desde los primeros tiempos cuando el oro era símbolo de poder y se usaba exclusivamente como ornamento. Luego aparece la moneda en Lidia y desde ese momento en adelante el oro se va consolidando como respaldo del dinero. Pero llega un punto en la narración histórica, justo en el momento de entrar en la edad contemporánea, con la creación del Banco de Inglaterra, donde el relato pasa a ser de una historia general a un libro para economistas. Es bastante difícil entender lo que se explica a partir de ese momento por el afán del autor de explicar los detalles específicos. Pero si uno hace un esfuerzo puede obtener la información más importante y comprender los hitos en la historia del oro y su relación tan estrecha con la economía actual.

About the Author
James Eade has written several books about chess, including the bestselling Chess for Dummies. As a player, he was awarded the title of Chess Master by the USCF in 1981 and by FIDE in 1993. He is currently President of the U.S. Chess Trust.

Al Lawrence is the Director of the Texas Tech Chess Program and former Executive Director of the USCF and World Chess Hall of Fame. Al is an award-winning author, journalist, and editor.

Excellent for newbies through 'pretty good' players

Excellent for all but quite advanced players. Especially good for instruction due to not only the content, but the excellent orthographic (sort of 3D) chessboard illustrations now readily possible using computer software. Begins at the VERY beginning and works through openings, basic strategy & tactics, and the end game. Gives 'Mastery' challenges for each section, and introduces about some of the true masters of the past. Highly motivating for the newish player and/or young person. (Get the new 2nd edition to score the Mastery challenges.)

Good introduction!

Very introductory and basic, yet if that is what you want, this is the book to get. It folds open for study while playing, gives all of the important ideas that a beginner needs to know, and gets you ready for an intermediate book. Pair with the Deep Fritz computer program. I review that program on its Amazon page.

An excellent book on chess. It's spiral bound and easy to lie flat next to your chess board and set up the examples and lessons. The graphics are very clear and easy to read and the examples are extremely informative. This book deserves much more attention. In time it could be a classic.
