For two millennia the right way to teach geometry was the Euclidean approach, and in many respects, this is still the case. But in the 1950s the cry "Down with triangles!" was heard in France and new geometry books appeared, packed with linear algebra but with no diagrams. Was this the new right approach? Or was the right approach still something else, perhaps transformation groups?

The Four Pillars of Geometry approaches geometry in four different ways, spending two chapters on each. This makes the subject accessible to readers of all mathematical tastes, from the visual to the algebraic. Not only does each approach offer a different view; the combination of viewpoints yields insights not available in most books at this level. For example, it is shown how algebra emerges from projective geometry, and how the hyperbolic plane emerges from the real projective line.

The author begins with Euclid-style construction and axiomatics, then proceeds to linear algebra when it becomes convenient to replace tortuous arguments with simple calculations. Next, he uses projective geometry to explain why objects look the way they do, as well as to explain why geometry is entangled with algebra. And lastly, the author introduces transformation groups---not only to clarify the differences between geometries, but also to exhibit geometries that are unexpectedly the same.

All readers are sure to find something new in this attractive text, which is abundantly supplemented with figures and exercises. This book will be useful for an undergraduate geometry course, a capstone course, or a course aimed at future high school teachers.

John Stillwell is Professor of Mathematics at the University of San Francisco. He is the author of several highly regarded books published by Springer, including Elements of Number Theory (2003), Mathematics and Its History (Second Edition, 2002), Numbers and Geometry (1998) and Elements of Algebra (1994).

Professor Stillwell was my History of Mathematics Professor at the University of San Francisco. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the PhD in Mathematics. He is an engaging lecturer and has written many textbooks on mathematics, especially important in the history of mathematics. His writing is clear prose and well revised and published. This textbook on the four pillars of geometry provides a gentle introduction to the geometries studied by professional mathematicians, without delving too deeply into advanced topics. He provides exercises for interested readers. This book is well organized and counts a significant contribution to the literature of mathematics in the modern century.

Lovable pig + wise spider = enduring classic

"Charlotte's Web," by E.B. White, belongs to a special class of literature: a children's book which has much to offer to older teen and adult readers. White's wonderful story is superbly complemented by the charming illustrations of Garth Williams.
As the story opens, eight year old farm girl Fern Arable stops her father from killing a piglet who has been labeled the runt of the litter. The little pig, whom Fern names Wilbur, becomes one of the central figures in the story. Eventually he will be befriended by Charlotte, the wise and loving spider mentioned in the book's title.
White creates a sort of modern animal fable in which his barnyard characters can speak both with each other and with Fern. White's barn is populated with some truly marvelous characters. Special mention should be made of Templeton the rat. Gluttonous, sneaky, often nasty, but curiously sympathetic, Templeton is one of the great anti-heroes in modern literature.
Part of this novel's brilliance is the fact that the author makes a heroine out of a spider: a creature that many people probably regard with fear. Unlike a cute piglet or other barnyard creatures, a spider is a creature vastly different from humans. White's Charlotte is a truly remarkable character. White's witty, compassionate prose style is an ideal vehicle for telling the story of Charlotte and her friends.
"Charlotte's Web" is a masterful blend of whimsy, humor, gentle satire, and life-and-death drama. But above all, it is a powerful story of friendship. Deeply moving and superbly written, this is a book which, I believe, will endure as a treasured classic.

My wife and I loved Charlotte's Web as children so now that our daughter is at an age where she will sit and listen to a long story we decided to start with this book.

Our daughter loved every chapter of the book, it held her attention quiet well reading just a few chapters a night. She never wanted us to stop. After reading the book we followed it up by watching both movies for a family night.

If you enjoy reading and your kids are ready to listen I would highly highly recommend Charlotte's Web as a great family time book.

A Classic Worth Revisiting

I bought this classic to read to my children before seeing the play. There are some important themes presented here such as: friendship, fear, risk, challenging the status quo, and life and death. It is was fun to revisit this classic story through their eyes, but prepare yourself for the aspects you likely forgot about if you're anything like me. It is a little heavy toward the end but it all ends up roses! My seven year old is now reading it on her own and loves it!
