Good Book

My daughter (9 years old) has been on an emotional rollercoaster the last couple of months. I have talked with her, but what do moms know? My sister recommended this book, and when my daughter read it she began to feel better and more 'normal'. We read the book out loud so that we could discuss things together. It really helped her open up and express her feelings more freely with me. (Plus she figured out that mom might know a thing to two after all...)

Provides good insights into emotions, but consider pre-reading it to see if it's suitable for your child.

After reading "The Care & Keeping of You 1: The Body Book for Younger Girls" with my 9-year-old daughter, I had really high hopes for this book. It was good, but I'm afraid it wasn't everything that I had hoped for.

It's worth noting that this book briefly mentions PMS, so it's probably best read after a book like "The Care & Keeping of You 1: The Body Book for Younger Girls", which introduces the concept of menstruation.

On the plus side, the book helps to normalize the many emotions a growing girl might be feeling. I like that it is explicit about how your emotions will affect your behavior, and your behavior will affect how other people react to you. You need to make sure you are exhibiting the actual emotions you feel; if you just act angry, other people - and yourself - won't understand or address the actual emotions you may be feeling, which may be embarrassment, disappointment, or shame.

The book has several chapters talking about emotions in general. Specific emotions are addressed in the following sections:

I'm Scared
I Feel Anxious
I'm So Jealous
I've Been Disrespected
I'm Angry
I'm Lonely
I'm Really Sad
I'm Grieving
I Don't Feel Safe

Much of the book is formatted like an advice column, with questions outlining particular scenarios and answers providing specific tips and strategies. In many ways, the Q & A format was a good thing, because it made a lot of the emotions seem relatable. There were common scenarios like, "I'm scared to sleep alone at night," "I'm jealous that my sister is in my cousin's wedding, but I'm not," and "My parents are divorced, and every time I stay with one of them, I miss the other one." On the other hand, however, I'm a bit concerned that some of the scenarios might actually introduce fears that my daughter never considered before. For example, in the "I Don't Feel Safe" chapter, there were scenarios like, "I worry about school shootings," and "My house burned down last month, and I'm afraid our new house will burn down, too."

Along the same lines, I'm afraid the book might introduce some additional concepts that maybe my child isn't ready for. In the "I'm Really Sad" chapter, there is a section listing "Signs of Depression", and one of them is "think[ing] a lot about death or suicide". It does not define suicide, and I'm not even sure if my daughter knows what "suicide" is, but if she doesn't, I'm not sure if this is the best way to introduce it. Maybe it is, because it's safely confined in a book about emotions? I don't know. I need to think about it some more while I decide whether or not to have my daughter read this book.

It might also be helpful for a parent previewing this book for a child to know that this book does mention the idea of "seeking professional help," going on to explain what therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists do.

Mostly, I'm disappointed that, despite touching upon embarrassment early in the book, there is no chapter titled, "I Feel Embarrassed." After anger, I feel like my daughter is most affected by unnecessary feelings of embarrassment.

Also, in the "I've Been Disrespected" chapter - which is basically about being bullied - I don't think the answers are entirely realistic. Of course it advocates using words to solve the problem, but it suggests saying things like, "I'd like to find a way for us to get along." I'm sorry, I just think that in the real world, if kids used language like that with a bully, it would be met with laughter and eye-rolling. I am all for having children work out their own problems, however, when it comes to bullying, I don't think this section emphasized enough the importance of letting the teacher know that bullying is occurring among classmates.

A Must For The Emotional & The Pragmatic

My 8-year-old daughter read this immediately... then used it's suggestions by the next day. This, from a very dramatic, cry at the drop of one negative word or look from someone type of girl. I am very pragmatic, so I had no idea how to help her, but thanks to this life-saving book she's taking care of it all by herself. Here' the kicker: She still comes to me and shares her emotions, but she's telling me how she's taking care of the problem. Yippee! I want her to include me in her life, not hide her feelings and cause a rift between us, and I'm also learning the techniques in the book for when the Universe converges on me from several angles and I'm feeling emotional and could use some sage advice on how best to handle it.

By the way, I've bought almost every single American Girl book and all are brilliant and well-loved by my daughter (even the Body Book). I've learned a lot myself. For her Fall birthday we are getting her a subscription to the magazine.

UPDATE: We got my daughter the subscription to the periodical and she devours it. Lots of fantastic tid-bits and more on how to handle emotions.

essential, how is it that no one has written a book like this before?

Finally, a structured, practical book on socially engaged art! Very thought provoking. I can hardly believe that a book like this hasn't been written before, as relational aesthetics have extended to include global politics and many artists seem to think that "(moving) image quoting" in a journalistic style equals political art...which I suppose it does actually, but actually where the credit needs to be given is to feminist art of the 1970's for kicking the whole process of political analysis off and rescuing art from aesthetic double binds and removal from actual human life.
Helguera touches on many possibilities and options for creating Socially Engaged Art, providing a framework to think both within and without...Helguera provides both positive and negative examples of socially engaged art, and does not necessarily guide the reader towards any foregone conclusion, I found it very open (the book) to interpretation...extremely thought provoking. I wonder what will come after socially engaged art, or if anything will. What is more human artwise than engaging socially with the world? Art is after all a human activity and eventual product made for human consumption--Helguera's book shows that beyond just relational art that art can indeed be USEFUL and this is, for me anyway, what I have been waiting for. And as Helguera gives credit to, artist Suzanne Lacy in particular can be seen as one precursor or model or example for a lot of what is happening today concerning this urgent development in culture...It's truly time for BEHAVIOR to take center stage in the art world!

A must-read!

This is an extremely smart and thoughtful exploration of socially engaged art. Helguera manages to be both incredibly practical and impressively learned in his approach. As a practitioner, it spoke to many of the issues and questions that I've grappled with. It's also very clear, concise, and compelling--I read it in one sitting! It's the book I've been hoping someone would write about the subject...

About the Author
Ronald E. Terry has taught chemical and petroleum engineering at the University of Kansas; petroleum engineering at the University of Wyoming; and chemical engineering and technology and engineering education at Brigham Young University, earning teaching awards at each university. This book is devoted to determining the prices of financial derivatives using a partial differential equation approach. In the first part the authors describe the formulation of the problems (including related free-boundary problems) and derive the closed form solutions if they have been found. The second part discusses how to obtain their numerical solutions efficiently for both European-style and American-style derivatives and for both stock options and interest rate derivatives. The numerical methods discussed are finite-difference methods. The book also discusses how to determine the coefficients in the partial differential equations.

The aim of the book is to provide readers who have some code writing experience for engineering computations with the skills to develop efficient derivative-pricing codes. The book includes exercises throughout and will appeal to students and researchers in quantitative finance as well as practitioners in the financial industry and code developers.

Well Done

This is a GREAT book... if you are looking for treatment of "options pricing" from 2 specific perspectives.

In the first half of the book, the authors tackle the pricing issue using PDEs only, paying little attention to the Martingale approach. The treatment is VERY detailed, starting with the Ito Lemma (one dimension and n-state variables), and gradually moving from Vanilla to Exotic options. There is also a shorter chapter on Interest Rate Derivatives.

The greatest thing about the book is that every result is either proved or strongly justified, and that each section nicely builds on previous results. The Barrier & Lookback options pricing formulas are thoroughly developped and the authors do not try to skate around more complicated aspects of the theory. The sections on American options (Linear Complementarity & Free Boundary Formulations, location of the free boundary) are gems! The book is obviously math intensive and sometimes a little dry, but efforts to go through all the sections are well rewarded.

In a second part, specific numerical techniques for solving the PDEs are thoroughly explained. First, numerical techniques are reviewed in a very tight chapter, swiftly and clearly presenting all one needs to know to efficiently tackle solving PDEs numerically. Then, specific option problems are discussed in details. No code is provided, but the mathematical procedures are very well laid out.

Overall, I found the monograph a lot more mathematically detailed than most other books on the market (Hull, Wilmott, etc...), while being relatively good at clearly highlighting why certain issues are problematic and constantly keeping the big picture in perspective.

Somewhat surprisingly for a first edition and given the sometimes complex equations, the editing is VERY tight (good English, few typos) and the incremental steps are well balanced in terms of providing enough information for reader to easily fill the gaps. The only suggestion for further editions would be to collate ALL the pricing formulas (some, when replicating calculations already presented, are left to be demonstrated as an exercise) in an Annex for quick reference. More coverage of Interest Rate models using the same detailed approach would also definitely add value.

In all, a very good book.

Very good book.
First chapter shows the basics of derivatives (someone would like Hull's for more detail).
Second is what I look for. Introduces derivatives pricing and stochastic processes by example.
From Black-Sholes to exotics and interest rate options, the reader will find PDE equation, boundary conditions and (a lot of) closed formulas.
Everything step-by-step. It is not a formula reference (like Haug's) but a book you will study in order to take practice to construct your own models.
Second half of book is about numeric solution. Well explained, a lot of case studies, but no pseudo-code or source code CD. Buy a Numerical Analysis book to support you with algorithm and coding if you need.

An excellent book on derivative pricing

So far, I have read/bought more than 30 books on Derivatives while studying for a Master's in Fin.Eng. and this book is by far one of the best in terms of introducing someone in a clear and concise manner to how to value and interpret many derivatives securities.

The other 2 reviews have clearly laid out the structure of the book, so I won't redo it here.

However, I wish to state how mathematically sound are the methods for exotic options (chap 3), for deriving the four one-factor interest models (chap 4) and most importantly, the critical reformulation of the American-style derivatives as a Linear Complementarity problem and the carefully and sound discussion of the free-boundary for such derivatives.

Also, the numerical section (chap 5 to 8 ) is very well laid out -again I possess more than a few books on the subject- and you end up with the ability to solve most of the PDE that you model, if you carefully write the appropriate code, and understand the meaning of the coefficients of the PDE, which takes time and experience.

An excellent book!
