Ellie Midwood continues her thrilling The Girl From Berlin trilogy with War Criminal’s Widow. As the Nazi regime is struggling to prolong its grip in Europe, the story of Annalise, her husband Heinrich, and her lover, Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, the Chief of the Reich Main Security Office, continues. Annalise and Heinrich are German, working as counterintelligence agents for the American OSS office within the enemy organization. The Third Reich, while often viewed as a formidable organization where all members embraced one goal, is portrayed in a different light in this book. The personal misgivings and individual goals of the officers of the Third Reich lend to an understanding that even such a malevolent force is comprised of conflicted individuals, sometimes doubting its own organization’s goals. Finally, the war is over, Annalise and Heinrich’s last days in their native homeland are harrowing, while an escape is planned by the appreciative American OSS office.

Learning more about the inner workings of the Nazi regime within the triangular relationship of three main characters is certainly an engaging and intriguing process. The Girl From Berlin: War Criminal’s Widow by Ellie Midwood is a suspense-filled, page-turning historical novel with many twists and turns. Ms. Midwood is able to develop complex characters and shows that few people are all-good, or all-evil, especially when living in unusual circumstances. However, when the war ends, the consequences of previous actions remain. This is a thought-provoking novel about a very difficult time in the last century. It is not always an easy read, but it will certainly give the reader much to contemplate.

A thought provoking page-turner

The story of "War Criminal's Widow" book 3 in the series The Girl from Berlin, highlights the skill of the author Ellie Midwood. Aspects of the series are sensitive, given they deal with war crimes. The dependence triangle of Annalise, her husband Heinrich, and Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, the Chief of the Reich Main Security Office, creates a compelling and complex personal story of flawed individuals, told against a fascinating and spine-chilling background of the rise and fall of The Third Reich.

This final book in the series is set during the demise of The Third Reich and the aftermath. As Germany falls to the allies there is a search for justice and for an atonement from war criminals. Many escape from that justice. Excuses are made for the criminal actions of those engaged war crimes by those who stand by them at the end.

This is a page-turning, gripping account of what people in these types of situations are: neither all devil, just as the winners in war aren’t pure saint. Neither of the the opposing men, husband, and lover of Annalise are shown as a hero. That’s how life is. This story's merit is that it was never about showing a perfect world, a perfect love, in shows the truth of human nature and how we can be corrupted by love ann hatred. This is great story telling.

This novel left me thinking, not of the retribution still owed to Ernst, but of his son. Ernst junior. He is a child of a Jew and of one who contributed to the destruction of many Jews. What will the world hold for his future? Will he grow up obsessed by bigotry and hatred as his father did, love unwisely as does his mother, or is there a future that includes humanitarian attitudes ahead for him?

The concept for this series was brilliant, and the writing brought it to life. You cannot read this story without feeling emotion and being left affected by the story. A deserved five stars.

Instant Classic

In this, the third book of the Girl From Berlin Series, Annalise finds herself in the final days of the second world war. Torn between her first love, husband Heinrich, and true love, lover Ernst, she has a front row seat as the Third Reich collapses. Her counter intelligence activities should have bought her safety from the forces closing in on Berlin, but that doesn’t keep her from despair when the city and all those she loves are in jeopardy.

I don’t envy the position Annalise finds herself in. To be balanced between the men she loves while watching what is left of her world fall apart, is heartbreaking. I touched on a point in an earlier review how not black and white the world is. The author has once again and more definitively shown how a war machine like the Nazis is made up of individuals that are simply trying to survive. No excuses are made for the horrors inflicted on the world, yet it is brought home clearly how easily good people can do bad things even in the name of doing good. The attention to detail is once again the finest point of the story. The reader feels what it was like to be trapped in a Berlin about to collapse at the end of a long war. The sacrifice of doing the right thing when it would be so easy to turn a blind eye was evocatively made clear.

I will admit the love story did not turn out the way I thought it should, but then that is why I am reading and Ellie Midwood is writing. It is a beautiful story full of nuance. The tale of the girl from Berlin and all the men who loved her is an instant classic.

Strap on your seatbelt! This is top notch writing!

I loved the first two books in this series and so I was hellbent on reading book three. My expectations were met and surpassed in every way. This is top notch story telling by a top notch author.

Before you begin reading strap on your seat belt. The story took me from nail biting tension in the first scene to moments of happiness and joy later into the story, and then, only halfway through the book, I was plunged into despair. Ms. Midwood had me in the palm of her hand as she toyed with my emotions and my heart rate was going up and down like a yo-yo. I was certain there would have to be a sad ending, because logically, how else could it end? Well, I was dead wrong, and glad of it. I never saw that ending coming. I'm still smiling at the huge twist.

Favorite character - Ernst Kaltenbrunner, and that's saying a lot, because I fell in love with Heinrich in book one.

Favorite scene - Ernst and Heinrich in the basement during the bombings getting drunk. What a scene! Close second is breakfast with Otto discussing sleeping arrangements. I won't say more and give away spoilers.

My only regret is to see this series come to an end...but wait! There another series about Ernst! OMG!

One last ride on the O.J. Merry-Go-Round?

This is Paula Barbieri's autobiography, including her side of the O.J. Simpson saga. And although it gives the reader a great deal of "the other woman's" insight into the mind and character of O.J. -- his treachery, lies, two-timing, cheating and temper tantrums -- that eventually wrecked their relationship, it also is an honest account of what happened to her during, and in the aftermath of, the "trial of the century."

The short version of her story is that it wrecked her career, her life, and her self-confidence and drove her into the hands of Jesus. The longer version begins with her executing a carefully pre-planned breakup with O.J. -- choosing as an alternative what could have been the beginning of a new relationship in Las Vegas with the famous singer, Michael Bolton. Her first rendezvous with Bolton just coincidentally occurred on the same night that O.J. killed Nicole and Ron Goldman.

Driven back to LA in part by guilt (she had wished that her competition Nicole, dead), Paula's mother instinct also kicked in and she went back to comfort O.J. in his time of need. Her own mother counseled desperately against her going back -- fearing that somehow O.J. would maneuver the saga ending into a double suicide involving her daughter and himself. But Paula ignored her mother's advice and went back to be at O.J. side anyway. This turned out to have been a big mistake, not so much because of the threat of a double suicide, but because instead of getting away from O.J. and starting a fresh more stable love life with someone else, she ended up falling in love with O.J. all over again.

However, by the time the trial ended and O.J. was acquitted of double murder, Paula was again "in too deep" to extricate herself from O.J.'s love, the glamorous life and her own new hopes for a future with him. With a brand new cycle of the same old O.J. games of distrust, betrayal, cheating, lying and dishonesty, and Paula's own life of cocaine and other sins, her life, love and career all spun out of control.

Like the rest of humanity, Ms. Barbieri came from a very dysfunctional family and made many bad choices along the way: endured mental abuse and seemed colossally naïve, in addition to having repeatedly failed to trust her better instincts. For instance, why would she allow herself to be sucked back into the glamour and sins of the Hollywood life style once she was free of it if she did not secretly enjoy it?

This time her ride on the O.J. merry-go-round would teach her two brutal, unforgiving poetically cynical lessons: First, that Marcus Allen, one of O.J.'s closest friends, and the man who probably was the one O.J. expected to catch at Nicole's house the night he went there to kill them, was also the man who introduced her to O.J. However, it seems that on June 12, 1994, Ron Goldman, returning Nicole's glasses, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Marcus, who set up O.J. with Paula, got away again.

The other lesson that Ms. Barbieri learned is that one knows that she has hit rock bottom when the only friend she has left in the world that she can trust is Jesus. Tragically, that is where Ms. Barbieri's story ends. Three Stars

No one else had a motive to kill Nicole and poor Ron Goldman was in the wrong place at the ...

I bought this book when it first came out and read it. Then I read it again recently and got a lot more out of it. It is well written despite some of the comments here. However, she did break up with O.J. the day that the murders were committed. And then flew to Vegas to be with Michael Bolton. The next day Paula found out about the murders and went back to L.A. to be with O.J. BIG MISTAKE! She should have said I broke up with you already and I cannot stand by you. End of story. But no. She lied on the stand and went to the jail to see O.J. all the time with periods of going back to Panama City. She lost work, lost her apartment and lost her ability to make a living all because she stood by O.J. She had to have known he was guilty. No one else had a motive to kill Nicole and poor Ron Goldman was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She went on and on and on about her religious beliefs and most of that could have been left out. What I got out of this book is how manipulative O.J. was, and is to this day I am sure, and I think a narcissistic sociopath. Any man that beats up a woman is a sick person. My opinion is that you can love a person, but walk away when you know that loving them is bad for you. Paula should have walked away from the beginning.

No remorse except for herself

This book is amazingly poorly written; Ms. Barbieri should have pursued her original plans to attend law school. Her writing perpetuates the myth that models and actresses are extremely self-centered. Never once does she mention any sorrow or remorse that a woman and man were murdered. Her pity is all for herself and how she "gave herself up" to falsely defend her lover and, in effect, to commit "perjury by silence and presence." Although it's true that nobody asked her if she'd left a "Dear OJ" e-mail on Simpson's voice mail just before she flew off to meet another man, she knew that this was crucial evidence. She also explains why she lied under oath about whether or not O.J. had ever been violent with her; she had "amnesia." What the book does provide--and that's why I read it--is a glance into the ultimate in dependency. I've always wondered why horrible killers, such as Ted Bundy, manage to attract women even after the world is pretty aware of what they've done. Paula Barbieri's book illustrates the strange magnetism that sociopaths can have when they find the right victim(s).

The Best Commentary on the Revelation

I have consulted almost 100 commentaries in my study on this grand book of the scriptures, but none possess the provocative and dynamic aspects as Jim's Revelation. As with all commentaries by Jim McGuiggan, he presents the material in a conversational manner, which exhibits his keen insights into the scriptures and tremendously helps the lay student. For years Revelation has been a perplexity and an enigma, which has prompted too many students to put it on the shelf and leave it to the "scholars." However, I suggest that with the help of this book, Revelation comes to life and enables the student to understand it in its historical and literary setting. On the other hand, many authors abuse this grand book in today's religious environment. McGuiggan will aptly quail the heresies that are being taught in many of these modern commentaries such as the doctrines of the "rapture," the "tribulation," and the "millennial reign." He will have the reader focus his thoughts of Revelation in their true Biblical sense--as literary figures to be understood symbolically. I am unable to do this book any sort of justice in the minor space I am allowed, but I do suggest that any student's library is incomplete if they do not own this book!

"ONE & ONLY" Amil/Pret book that doesn't bailout & jump ship

If you love to get your Revelation views from the front page of today's newspaper, then you will destest this book. If your favorite preachers are those who love to get their Reveltion views from the front page of today's newspaper, then you'll really desest this book. And if you think that Hal Lidsey and Tim LaHaye are significant scholars on Revelation, then you will absolutely hate this book.

BUT if you are a true student of the Bible and love expository teaching, then get ready to have your socks blessed off.

Jim takes a "preterist" view of Revelation and powerfully supports that view. He insists that the reader be consistent with the 12+ scriptures in Revelation that limit the time period for fulfillment of the book to a time that was "soon to take place". NOT "SOON" from 2005, but "SOON" from 79 AD. He also makes the "symbolic" nature of Revelation crystal clear.

And what makes his book the "top of the heap" of preterist commentaries on Revelation is his exposition of chapter 21. Jim is the "ONE & ONLY" perterist commentator who doesn't "bailout" or "jump ship" when it comes to chapter 21.

So to say that there isn't another commentary on Revelation like Jim's isn't an exaggeration. God bless. Mike

Hermeneutics

Great stuff. Although some things he doesn't cover enough I say. I don't have a list of pro's n con's really, I read this book over a year ago. It is on my list of good commentaries of the book of Revelation. However, I think that commentaries on this book are best when eat the meat of each one and spit out the bones, seeing which views and exegetics work best with harmony of Scripture and history. Jim's book is great, but don't stop with this one, also read "Revelation: Jesus Christ's Last Message of Hope" by Wayne Jackson as well as "An Eschatology of Victory" By J. Marcellus Kik. These are my top 3 recommendations for studying the apocalpyse. There are views by all that I don't believe are biblically irrefutable but we're saved by grace, afterall, not irrefutability in apocalypses. Enjoy your book!

Colin Hardwick started his career in the lighting industry and quickly moved into the Quality field before becoming a Master Black Belt in Lean six Sigma. His next move took him into Rolls-Royce working on the design and supply of nuclear reactors for Britain's submarine fleet and he rose to become Quality & Business Improvement Manager after spells as Production Manager and Design Manager. Chemring plc then offered a chance to become Quality & Business Director in their European Division working on the design and supply of explosive products and he later became responsible for Engineering & Technology in addition to Quality & Business Improvement. In 2013 he set up his own consultancy specialising in quality improvements - Hardwick Consultants Ltd. He has used Design of Experiments to solve a multitude of problems in all three industries, saving millions of pounds in the process.

A practical guide to get you up and running with DOE

An excellent guide for constructing and running a DOE matrix. I ended up using this book to put together an experiment for one of my projects at work. I couldn't believe how quickly this came together.

This text assumes that you are already using Minitab Statistical Analysis Software. I didn't see that mentioned anywhere in the description. I'm familiar with Minitab and I admit that it's a powerful tool. But I was hoping that this was a text on DOE that didn't depend on expensive software.

Tony Wagner currently serves as an Expert In Residence at Harvard University’s Innovation Lab. A valuable book on the current situation in education and what needs to be done to improve it.

The Global Achievement Gap by Tony Wagner is another in a series of recent books that present a critical view of American education. What Wagner and others decry is the failure of schools to teach what he calls “survival skills,” namely such things as critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork. Wagner is described on the back cover of the book as an “Expert in Residence at Harvard University’s Innovation Lab.” He claims that there are two achievement gaps in our education systems. The first is the gap between the quality of schooling that most middle-class students get and the quality available to poor and minority children. The second gap, and the one that is the primary focus of the book, is the global gap between even what our best schools are teaching and testing and what all students need to succeed as workers, learners and citizens in today’s global knowledge economy.

Wagner posits seven “survival skills” that he says are necessary. These include:
1. Critical thinking and problem solving
2. Collaboration across networks
3. Agility and adaptability
4. Initiative and entrepreneurship
5. Effective oral and written communication
6. Accessing and analyzing information
7. Curiosity and imagination.

He discusses these shortcomings in detail and gives many examples. He states that there is an overemphasis on testing which leads teachers to teach to the test. Another problem is that the training future teachers get in education schools is not adequate to what is needed.

This book is very valuable for parents, students and anyone interested in education—both in the United States and globally. It not only provides specific examples, it also gives sources and organizations that you can contact.

Thinking About What's Missing in Our American Schools

First published in 2008, this edition contains updates from 2010 and 2014, which I found most interesting. I love how this book addresses the importance of critical thinking, communication, creativity, innovation to name a few in education. Standardized testing is out of control and this Harvard man hits the nail on the head about what is wrong with schools.

GREAT BOOK TO LEARN WITH

This is a great book for aspiring photographer. Very detailed book and beautifully illustrated, This book is very well made in a technical point of view. I also love how every chapter and how orderly it is. I definitely put this one as a collector's item. I ordered last January 8 and it was delivered yesterday. Great book, good customer service! Two thumbs up!

Great book for a beginner or hobbyist

Great book for a beginner or hobbyist. The sections are intuitively written in an approachable manner with full color examples of the topics being discussed. Additionally, the book has several assignments to give you real hands on opportunities to apply the lessons you've learned. I highly recommend this book.

Streeck argues that since Western economic growth rates began falling in the 1970s, it has been increasingly hard for politicians to square the requirements of profitability and electoral success; attempts to do so (‘buying time’) have resulted in public spending deficits and private debt. Wolfgang Streeck is the director of the Max Planck Institute for Social Research in Cologne and Professor of Sociology at the University of Cologne. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics and a member of the Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences as well as the Academia Europaea.

The Debt State vs Democracy

In this useful book Wolfgang Streeck presents images of post 2008 democratic capitalism around his Tax State/ Debt State idea.

Speaking of the West, the Tax State covers the post WW2 period to the late 1970's showing manageable budget deficits, government spending on infrastructure, balanced corporate and union power and general national unity policies with a leftist slant that he clearly approves of.

The Debt State is a different animal involving what he calls the financialization of society. Basically he sees a radically changed world of instant communication and enormously increased competition with Western states unable to afford the welfare commitments that date from their industrial leadership. So what to do?

Streeck sees Neoliberalism giving birth to a Debt State in which private and government deficits are "financed" at low interest rates and savers are more or less obliged to take on more debt and speculate in the face of near zero returns on their capital. He records the way that public debt ballooned until 1993, private debt led to the internet (2000) and housing/banking (2008) collapses and how oceans of government QE credit are now giving us the current "recovery".

The core of the book is an interesting discussion of the way in which the Debt State interacts with Democracy.

Essentially debtors lose freedom whether they are individuals or governments, and he shows the neoliberal totemization of Market Confidence above all else, and the absolute abuse of this concept to cow politicians into accepting the whole neoliberal package of unrestricted movement of capital (with the associated threat), unlimited freedom to outsource, and the requirement that the public give 100% backing to the craziest leveraged Wall Street bets.

So far so good, but the author then suggests a dubious solution in returning to the Tax State when (in the opinion of this reviewer) he could have devoted more space to the fundamental issues of outsourcing and economic efficiency + a more positive views of the European Union. Just because it's been captured by "Marktvolk" doesn't mean that it's a bad idea.

This reviewer personally witnessed the Tax State of Great Britain in the early 1970's with high personal taxation, out of control government spending, Keynesianism, nationalization and a Social Contract in the context of an activist Socialist/ Marxist government. As Burk and Cairncross show in their worthwhile book "Goodbye, Great Britain: The 1976 IMF Crisis" it was a spectacular failure. Great Britain (1974-76) had the highest inflation in Europe, the lowest rise in GNP, the highest unemployment and the lowest output per man/hour in manufacturing and was seen to fail on all counts.

The author is somewhat surprised that Germany still has a successful manufacturing sector and could maybe have incorporated this observation into a broader discussion of outsourcing. Outsourcing (complete international economic freedom) is a central plank of Neoliberalism and is arguably the root cause of structural Western unemployment (and record corporate profits) and the collapse of the Tax State. If CEO's like Jack Welch have for years been applying his 70/70/70 rule (70% of research and development should be outsourced, 70% of that should be outsourced offshore, 70% should be outsourced overseas and sent to India) then surely this reduces employment and skills and generates budget and trade deficits.

The author seems to be too focused on Keynesianism vs Neoliberalism when in reality the debate has probably moved on. For example Joseph Heath in his valuable book "Economics Without Illusions: Debunking the Myths of Modern Capitalism" suggests that the Left and Right have both developed a malignant form of their respective ideologies. The Left has extended costly government "care" to whole sections of the adult population that like it but shouldn't receive it. The Right tries to dispense with government altogether and doesn't recognize that it is a vital framework for growth.

Heath also observes that at a fundamental level, societal/economic efficiency is not a Left/Right issue at all and is basically non-political. Your chosen system either gives you good value health care or it doesn't.

On page 172, Streeck says that, "In the Social World one never steps in the same river twice", which is probably true but there are still some striking similarities between the USA of 2014 and Germany of 1918 and his book has a notable Spengler like feel in its opposition of Staatsvolk (social justice) and Marktvolk (market justice). Both countries had/have intractable debts, a dominant market class, democratic gridlock, out of control special interests and failed taxation and both are resorting/resorted to covering current spending with money printing.

The difference is that Streeck sees salvation in a return to a Tax State whereas Spengler saw it in, "the final battle between Democracy and Caesarism, between the leading forces of dictatorial money-economics and the purely political will-to-order of the Caesars". An interesting difference.

With regard to Europe he seems unduly pessimistic. The EEC has brought peace, the free movement of labour and a single currency which do have some positive aspects which he ignores. Also, even the strongest critics of Europe (such as Nigel Farage of the UK Independence Party) are often not at all personally hostile to their fellow Europeans. They actually quite like Europe and only object to the grossly inefficient special interest Neoliberal Market Construction that has taken control of the project.

Nevertheless, this is certainly a key book in the conversation about the Debt State/ Democracy and is highly recommended.
