About the Author
Albert M. Craig is the Harvard-Yenching Research Professor of History Emeritus at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1959. A graduate of Northwestern University, he received his Ph.D. at Harvard University. He has studied at Strasbourg University and at Kyoto, Keio, and Tokyo universities in Japan. He is the author of Choshu in the Meiji Restoration (1961), The Heritage of Japanese Civilization (2011), and, with others, of East Asia, Tradition and Transformation (1989). He is the editor of Japan, A Comparative View (1973) and co-editor of Personality in Japanese History (1970), Civilization and Enlightenment: The Early Thought of Fukuzawa Yukichi (2009). He was the director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute. He has also been a visiting professor at Kyoto and Tokyo universities. He has received Guggenheim, Fulbright, and Japan Foundation Fellowships. In 1988 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government.

William A. Graham is Albertson Professor of Middle Eastern Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and O’Brian Professor of Divinity and Dean in the Faculty of Divinity at Harvard University, where he has taught for thirty-four years. He has directed the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and chaired the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, the Committee on the Study of Religion, and the Core Curriculum Committee on Foreign Cultures. He received his BA in Comparative Literature from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, an A.M. and Ph.D. in History of Religion from Harvard, and studied also in Göttingen, Tübingen, Lebanon, and London. He is former chair of the Council on Graduate Studies in Religion (U.S. and Canada). In 2000 he received the quinquennial Award for Excellence in Research in Islamic History and Culture from the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. He has held John Simon Guggenheim and Alexander von Humboldt research fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his publications are Beyond the Written Word: Oral Aspects of Scripture in the History of Religion (1987); Divine Word and Prophetic Word in Early Islam (1977–ACLS History of Religions Prize, 1978); and Three Faiths, One God (co-authored, 2003).

Donald Kagan is Sterling Professor of History and Classics at Yale University, where he has taught since 1969. He received the A.B. degree in history from Brooklyn College, the M.A. in classics from Brown University, and the Ph.D. in history from Ohio State University. During 1958—1959 he studied at the American School of Classical Studies as a Fulbright Scholar. He has received three awards for undergraduate teaching at Cornell and Yale. He is the author of a history of Greek political thought, The Great Dialogue (1965); a four-volume history of the Peloponnesian war, The Origins of the Peloponnesian War (1969); The Archidamian War (1974); The Peace of Nicias and the Sicilian Expedition (1981); The Fall of the Athenian Empire (1987); a biography of Pericles, Pericles of Athens and the Birth of Democracy (1991); On the Origins of War (1995); and The Peloponnesian War (2003). He is coauthor, with Frederick W. Kagan, of While America Sleeps (2000). With Brian Tierney and L. Pearce Williams, he is the editor of Great Issues in Western Civilization, a collection of readings. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal for 2002 and was chosen by the National Endowment for the Humanities to deliver the Jefferson Lecture in 2004.

Steven Ozment is McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard University. He has taught Western Civilization at Yale, Stanford, and Harvard. He is the author of eleven books. The Age of Reform, 1250—1550 (1980) won the Schaff Prize and was nominated for the 1981 National Book Award. Five of his books have been selections of the History Book Club: Magdalena and Balthasar: An Intimate Portrait of Life in Sixteenth Century Europe (1986), Three Behaim Boys: Growing Up in Early Modern Germany (1990), Protestants: The Birth of A Revolution (1992), The Burgermeister’s Daughter: Scandal in a Sixteenth Century German Town (1996), and Flesh and Spirit: Private Life in Early Modern Germany (1999). His most recent publications are Ancestors: The Loving Family of Old Europe (2001), A Mighty Fortress: A New History of the German People (2004), and “Why We Study Western Civ,” The Public Interest 158 (2005).

Frank M. Turner is John Hay Whitney Professor of History at Yale University and Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, where he served as University Provost from 1988 to 1992. He received his B.A. degree at the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D. from Yale. He has received the Yale College Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching. He has directed a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute. His scholarly research has received the support of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson Center. He is the author of Between Science and Religion: The Reaction to Scientific Naturalism in Late Victorian England (1974), The Greek Heritage in Victorian Britain (1981), which received the British Council Prize of the Conference on British Studies and the Yale Press Governors Award, Contesting Cultural Authority: Essays in Victorian Intellectual Life (1993), and John Henry Newman: The Challenge to Evangelical Religion (2002). He has also contributed numerous articles to journals and has served on the editorial advisory boards of The Journal of Modern History, Isis, and Victorian Studies. He edited The Idea of a University by John Henry Newman (1996), Reflections on the Revolution in France by Edmund Burke (2003), and Apologia Pro Vita Sua and Six Sermons by John Henry Newman (2008). Between 1996 and 2006 he served as a Trustee of Connecticut College and between 2004 and 2008 as a member of the Connecticut Humanities Council. In 2003, Professor Turner was appointed Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University.

Great book

I was required to read this book in a college gender and inequality course. It covers a variety of topics including gender identities, queer theory, queer alternatives, etc. The book discusses heterosexuality and homosexuality and how each of these (among others) are viewed in our society. Another perk about the book is that it is quick and easy to read and the chapters are relatively short. I would definitely recommend this book for any college course dealing with gender studies. However, anyone interested in the subject would also benefit from reading it. Also, the book includes a definitions section, notes at the end of each chapter and suggestions for further reading.

In the interest of full disclosure, I know the author of this book personally and professionally. That doesn't change the fact that I think this is one of the clearest and most engaging explanations of feminism, queer theory, and their connections that I've ever read. This book is readable for people with a variety of interests and investments in philosophy, feminism, and queerness, from beginners to advanced theorists.

It can often be difficult to drill down complex philosophical ideas into a format that is accessible to a variety of people, but Mimi Marinucci has managed it.

I read this book twice to glean as much as I could from it. Full and rich and thankfully entirely readable this is a great intro to Queer Studies. I highly recommend reading the source materials listed at the end of each chapter to gain extra depth into each subject!

Charles R. Lister is a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution's Doha Center. He was formerly head of the Middle East and North Africa section at IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre.

Straightforward and good history and explanation of ISIS / the Islamic State

I ordered this based on Charles Lister's reputation, as well as the fact that Ahmed Rashid wrote the foreword. Lister has studied the Middle East for both Janes and Brookings. When the book arrived I was surprised to realize how short it is. I'm actually glad it didn't turn out to be a thick academic tome. It's very readable, and I finished this in two evenings. I feel like I now have a solid understanding of where ISIS came from and what the dynamics are that have made them so successful in their deplorable pursuits and actions.

Brilliantly researched and well written

Charles Lister's book is a an absolute must read for anyone seriously studying the ISIL dilemma. In fact, it has led me to a topic for my thesis. Mr. Lister is a renowned expert on the subject, so you can't go wrong by reading this. What is the most important thing I took out of this book? ISIL has two faces- one for the public, and another that is very close hold- that of a tightly ran bureaucracy led at the highest levels by Saddam Hussein's former officers. Charles' description of the intelligence driven ops behind the fall of Mosul, as well as the tactics used by ISIL in Jalula opened my eyes to the true nature of this threat. Brilliantly researched and well written. Thank you Mr. Lister.

More policy recommendations than a history...but interesting for that

This book is short enough at 85 Kindle pages to be considered a pamphlet or monograph and yet it clearly outlines the genesis and development of ISIS in Iraq and Syria. It focuses more intensely on ISIS strengths and weaknesses rather than ideology. Rather than detail accounts of successes in the field or Western attempts to combat ISIS, it assumes a conversant and sympathetic Western audience. He has a more in-depth treatment due to be published in the U.K. in November this year (Hurst) and the U.S. in 2016 (Oxford Univ Press), called THE SYRIAN JIHAD: AL-Qaeda, the Islamic State and the Evolution of an Insurgency. Lister is a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Doha Center in Qatar, Senior Consultant at The Shaikh Group, and formerly head of MENA at IHS Jane’s Terrorism & Insurgency Centre in London.

While many radical insurgents originated in Saudi Arabia, Lister makes clear that is began originally as opposition to the Saudi monarchy, therefore correcting what might be a misapprehension among observers: since many radicals issued from Saudi, one might conclude that the country fostered them, when in fact, they caused them. The fact remains that the Saudi government did little to curb radical ideologies originating on their soil, and did, in fact, make much of its opposition to the Shia sect’s power and control, as well as sponsoring or condoning the adoption of the variant of Wahhabism that is the ISIS creed.

Lister outlines the way ISIS has made itself financially strong: oil revenues from siphoned or takeover wells, levies on the transportation of goods within affected countries, taxes in areas it controls, outright theft, kidnap-for-ransom, extortion and protection rackets, and the sale of antiquities, among other things. It has a strict bureaucratic hierarchy which gives it some reach into the organizations it claims. It has gathered to itself disaffected and trained military men from throughout the Islamic world, has released from prison captured radicals and utilized their talents, and uses social media, including English-language outlets, effectively.

ISIS is not currently waging a war against the West. This makes it essentially different from Al Qaeda. ISIS is intent upon establishing a trans-national caliphate of their particular brand of Islam, which has, in effect, caused such sectarian strife in affected countries that ISIS may be able to capitalize in the vacuum of governance. This broad-yet-narrow outlook may be an exploitable weakness: their violence against Muslims who do not adhere to their stated tenets promotes violence against their movement, and governments accustomed to operating within state boundaries will oppose any incursion on their soils. The civilians on the ground may well oppose a trans-national caliphate based on Wahhabism but have fewer options available to them.

Lister’s work already seems a little out of date, for just yesterday we heard that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, in talks with Russia and Turkey, stated a willingness to consider Assad remaining in power, while Lister defends the position taken by the U.S. last year: that Assad must go. But you will see in this analysis suggestions for Western strategy or policy in combating the ISIS scourge, with an emphasis on Western support of local actors rather than intervention. The trouble with writing about trouble spots is that things change so quickly and sometimes decisively. However, the bulk of this short book is detailed enough on actors and attitudes to be useful. Abandoning present-day intrigues (MAMista, Spy Sinker, etc.), Deighton journeys back to WW II (SS-GB and XPD)--and a terrific return it is: a rich drama of heroes and villains awaiting German General Erwin Rommel's attack on Cairo--the ``city of gold.'' The plots here are many, but central among them is the attempt by Special Investigation Branch Major Bert Cutler to unmask the spy who's been leaking British secrets to Rommel. The kicker is that Cutler isn't Cutler; he's really Jimmy Ross, a British corporal who was on his way to Cairo to be court-martialed for killing an officer when his escort, Cutler, keeled over from a heart attack. Quick-thinking Ross switched IDs with Cutler and now finds himself in Cairo with an office, full staff, and carte blanche to turn the city upside down in pursuit of the spy--that is, if he doesn't betray himself first to any of the marvelously realized characters who crowd the pages here, from his leathery assistant to a manipulative Jewish nationalist, a White Russian prince, two young and beautiful Englishwomen, an upper-class British deserter turned grand thief, a too-caricatured American reporter (all tough pose and cocky action), and King Farouk himself--fat, decadent, imperious. It's the deserter who--by committing a murder that Ross must investigate--turns out to be Ross's main foil; and it's he who pulls the narrative--the first half of which springs forward mostly on perfectly pitched dialogue--into the desert and shattering action as Rommel attacks an armored caravan carrying Ross and several others, precipitating a crisis that movingly strips these men, good and evil, down to their bare selves. At one point, Ross is likened to Bogart--appropriate in a novel so reminiscent in spirit to Casablanca. One of Deighton's lesser known, but better stories

This seems to be one of the lesser-known Deighton novels, but I have read it twice and I think this is both one of his best novels AND one of the best WW2 novels ever written. That praise may seem over the top, but this story is really, really good. Deighton puts a great twist of the story of Rommel's spy and he is a superb writer anyways. Well worth reading.

A Different Len Deighton

CITY OF GOLD is a different kind of Len Deighton book. There is no cold war Berlin here. No Bernard Sampson risking his life to make one more dangerous border crossing. No Fiona, the non-traitor traitor, nor any of the rest of Deighton's usual cast of spies, counter spies, and stay-at-homes. Deighton, to his credit, has tried something different here.
Far from the cold war in both time and place, we find ourselves in 1942 Cairo in the presence of one Bert Cutler who isn't Bert Cutler at all. He is really Jimmy Ross who doesn't want to be Bert Cutler but can't afford to be Jimmy Ross. We first meet Ross on a train on the way to Cairo in the Custody of Cutler. Ross is being taken to Cairo to be tried for murder when Cutler suffers a fatal heart attack. The quick thinking Ross manages to switch identities with the deceased and shortly finds himself in Cairo charged with finding the identity of a spy who is leaking information on British troop movements to Rommel, the Chief of the German Tank Corps. Ross doesn't want to stay Cutler. He doesn't want to hunt for a spy. All he wants to do is to escape before his true identity is discovered. An escape opportunity never presents itself.
This is not a spy story. It is, however, a pretty good adventure set in Cairo and the surrounding desert. As Cutler, Ross's life is further complicated by the murder of a British soldier that he is expected to investigate. In investigating this murder, he runs across a group of "special assignment" British Soldiers who aren't really soldiers at all, but armed marauders who steal British Munitions and sell them to the highest bidder. To further complicate matters, the second in command of this group isn't even British. He's really German, but none of the other members of his "Unit" have been able to figure that out. In the final analysis, this man is the key to solving both mysteries, the intelligence leak and the murder.
Ross, along with some real British Soldiers and the profiteering phonies are all caught in the desert in a major raid by Rommel. All but Ross die, but not before he has solved both questions. In the aftermath, Ross, whose true identity is discovered. is set free and never tried on the murder charge against him, but to get the answer to the key question: who was leaking the strategic information, I'm afraid that you will have to read CITY OF GOLD. That is what this review is about isn't it?

No CD in the package

I was disappointed that there is no CD in the package, despite this being stated on the invoice slip. I feel that the cost is expensive when an integral part of the book is missing.

Takes earthquake prediction to a whole new level

I had ordered this book several times before, but needed another copy. I had my own ideas about this subject and this book confirmed them, even though the author was only able to cite the 'whats' rather than the 'whys' animals behaved the way they did before earthquakes. The animals were responding to what would be causing the earthquake rather than predicting the earthquake. It turns out that earthquakes are a two-stage process. The first stage is the effect that changing magnetic fields have on water in confined spaces such as in the soil or in what are called 'inclusions' in crystals in the earths surface. The second is the effect that tides in the earth's crust has on causing the earthquake itself after the changes in the water lubricated the rocks to make it easier for the tidal stresses to to cause the ground to actually shift instead of just being stressed.

The changes in the Earth's magnetic field could be traced to high solar wind or a massive ejection of solar particles that heads toward Earth. Eclipses are especially problematic for earthquakes.

The author's discussion of the clouding of well water was a very important clue that provided the key evidence that my ideas were correct/ The behavior of water in changing magnetic fields accounts for a host of other unexplained phenomena.

It also appears that parts of the Earth may be superconducting, and that changes in magnetic fields may cause those parts of the Earth to change from the superconducting state to the non-superconducting state or vice-versa causing great stress in that part of the Earth which creates an earthquake when tidal forces in the Earth causes the ground to shift.

Similarly, volcanic eruptions may be related to these processes. Ironically, I first bought this book at the MIT Press when I was looking for another book, POLYWATER. It turns out that the two phenomena are related. Human levitation and unexplained aerial lights are other rare phenomena that are also related to these issues.

As the author points out, the Chinese take these animal behavior phenomena very seriously, and have people report any such behavior so that the authorities can determine if they should have people evacuate the area. Ironically, some earthquakes in Asia that occurred in the late 1990s after I had already read this book confirmed the clouding of well water before these earthquakes.

This is a very valuable book for those who are curious to learn more about these dangerous phenomena.

One of the additional ironies was that, as a physics PhD candidate at MIT in the early 1960s, I became interested in superconductivity because of the effect of magnetic fields on the superconducting phase change. The idea that this might be related to earthquakes never crossed my mind until high-temperature phase change superconductors were discovered in 1986, and a professor of geology at at the University of Minnesota pointed out that the crystal structure of parts of the Earth's crust were similar to the structure of the crystals used by researchers of high-temperature phase-change superconductors. I immediately saw the possible connection to human levitation and eventually to earthquakes. This illustrates the advantage of reading widely and thinking about possible connections if your objective is to understand the physics of the unexplained. Most researchers just delve deeply into their narrow specialty rather than spread themselves more broadly as I did. But, then again, they have jobs and research grants to worry about, whereas I did my research more as hobby. Needless to say, Amazon gets a lot of business from me as a result.

I love this book. It answers all my questions.

I stumbled on this book while I was a biology student 30 years ago, and it answered all my questions.

In the ensuing years, I have become sensitive to magnetic (piezoelectric) fields similar to those described by Mr. Tributsch. I doubt I would feel a field as minute as the ones a fault puts out before an earthquake, but you never know. I can feel the field a CT scan puts out, and the technicians say they can't believe it - they've never heard of such a thing - they didn't even know it put out "a field." I tell them, "Give me a CT machine and let me take it home and I'll sleep so well you won't believe it."

They shake their heads. "Only if you have $50,000."

I can also feel the charge of a dry wind when I ride my bicycle, so maybe I would be able to feel the seismic field.

I actually wonder if feeling these fields is something primitive man could do naturally, and we've "domesticated" ourselves out of it. I believe reading this book was one step along the journey that led me to feeling magnetic fields. Beginning to work with magnets for pain relief was the second step. Doing aura work was the third.

Perhaps each of us has the undeveloped capacity.

"A ghost story should never end perfectly. That is my rule of thumb. After investigating ghost experiences for nearly thirty years, I realised that the finely polished stories told by storytellers and “ghost walkers” were exactly that – polished. In polishing stories we lose the personality of the haunted and indeed the haunter itself, that’s why in my books, research papers and articles, I always maintain the original testaments and facts.

The stories that I have collected for you now are rough diamonds, totally unpolished and any additions by myself are kept to a minimum and noted clearly.

As I began to compile these stories I began to realise that I was actually becoming very affected by them and I am sure you will too. There is no doubt you will have your favourites once you have read the book, but mine are as follows. One of the standout stories for me, is “The Ghost with no mouth” – a series of terrifying experiences in a modern house in which the witness’s child describes the ghost as having “no mouth and wears black boots but is naughty”. The experiences were very real to the family involved, and you wonder if “Black Square” continues to haunt this dwelling.

Another story “The Mystery Lady” is downright creepy, a man encounters a strange woman on a deserted train station, she mumbles to herself and refuses to get on board the last train to Portsmouth. The next day he discovers that he was actually talking to a ghost! I spare you the details so not to spoil the story, but you will certainly have a chill!

In total there are fifty real experiences with ghosts and spirits included in this book and all direct from the witnesses themselves. None of them wanted their names publishing or any publicity about their experiences but all of them had the need to share, and share they have done."

During the last ten years he has lectured internationally as well as appearing at The Sunday Times Literature Festival (along side Professor Bruce Hood) and various festivals and universities across the UK. MJ Wayland’s interest in the paranormal, especially ghosts, began at an early age after experiencing a number of unusual incidents that his peers could not explain. In his early teens he joined various research societies and began to study the multiple facets to the paranormal with a scientific and historical viewpoint. His research has taken him from dark haunted castles of Britain to the haunted graveyards of New Orleans, investigating his primary love of ghosts to sightings of black panthers. Since the mid-1990s, MJ Wayland has provided consultancy for TV, film and theatre as well as appearing in local, national, international newspapers, radio and TV. He is the author of eight best-selling books, “50 Real Ghost Stories” holding the Amazon top 10 bestselling Paranormal book for the second consecutive Halloween in 2013. More recently he provided consultancy for the forthcoming Hammer film “The Quiet Ones” due April 2014.

Interesting, but not spooky.

It was alright. Some of the stories are really good, but a lot of them are only about 2 pages long. Very short. And they aren't too riveting or spooky. If you are the kind of person who is spooked very easily, this could be the book for you. If you are an avid believer in the supernatural or are just looking to read a few stories at night before bed to give yourself a riveting scare, I wouldn't get this one. Yes the stories are interesting, and I can relate to a few of them, but none really have much pizazz or fright to them.

Great stories for those who believe in ghosts because this book includes 50 real-life stories that are told by the actual witnesses! Fun book for Halloween or even year round.

True Ghost Stories

These true ghost stories are from the UK, but they could happen anywhere. These stories take place in houses, cemeteries, on the road -- all around the town. They may not be especially frightening, but they do let you know you're not alone. You may remember a similiar experience after you read some of these stories. I recommend 50 Real Ghost Stories for those who love the paranormal.
