I learned a lot from this experienced practitioner.

The author shares his considerable practical experience of ham radio in an easy to read and informative book. It covers equipment (including commercial and home brew), antennas, bands, propagation, modes and operating procedures that give the reader valuable tips on how to enjoy success in the challenging art of low power operation. The focus on QRP is, of course, valuable for operators working at all power levels.

Peter has always been generous with his contribution to the hobby of amateur radio and this book adds to the information available to newcomers. I look forward to more from VK3YE in the future.

What you need for QRP radio

Mr. Parker brought his considerable enthusiasm, knowledge and conversational ability to the Kindle community and in so doing continued his excellent contributions to amateur radio. I've long been a subscriber to his YouTube channel and web postings where he demonstrates practical applications of ham radio and this practicality transfers well into electronic print. This book is a very good overview of QRP and very well could serve as a standard how to guide for assembling and operating a low power ham station. 73 AF4B

1. INTRODUCTION
Structural members subjected to axial compressive loads are often called by names identifying their functions. Of these, the best-known are columns, the main vertical compression members in a building frame. Other common compression members include chords in trusses and bracing members in frames.

The selection of a particular shape for use as a compression member depends on the type of structure, the availability, and the connection methods. Load-carrying capacity varies approximately inversely with the slenderness ratio, so stiff members are generally required. Rods, bars, and plates, commonly used as tension members, are too slender to be used as compression members unless they are very short or lightly loaded.

For building columns, W shapes having nominal depths of 14 in or less are commonly used. These sections, being rather square in shape, are more efficient than others for carrying compressive loads. (Deeper sections are more efficient as beams.) Pipe sections are satisfactory for small or medium loads. Pipes are often used as columns in long series of windows, in warehouses, and in basements and garages. In the past, square and rectangular tubing saw limited use, primarily due to the difficulty in making bolted or riveted connections at the ends. Modern welding techniques have essentially eliminated this problem.

Built-up sections are needed in large structures for very heavy loads that cannot be supported by individual rolled shapes. For bracing and compression members in light trusses, single-angle members are suitable. However, equal-leg angles may be more economical than unequal-leg angles because their least radius of gyration values are greater for the same area of steel. For top chord members of bolted roof trusses, a pair of angles (usually unequal legs, with long legs back-to-back to give a better balance between the radius of gyration values about the x-and y-axes) are used with or without gusset plates. In welded roof trusses, where gusset plates are unnecessary, structural tees are used as top chord members.

I highly recommend buying a separate construction study guide

I gave it three stars because I took the Construction Depth exam, and this reference has very little construction information. I highly recommend buying a separate construction study guide. However, this reference was quite useful to me during the morning exam for the non-construction problems.

HUGE reference, and it has way more information than you would need for any PE exam. I do not recommend using this as a study guide (except for the example problems), just a pure reference like the design standards. Once you narrow down the sections specific to your exam, the material is very useful. Some of the problems were representative of the exam, and others were so complex, they could never be solved in the average 6 minutes per problem (at least not by me). It is good to work those more complex problems for your depth area, so you have a better understanding of the topic. For the exam though, you might have to do two or three steps of those really complex problems.

First off, from the 13th edition to the 14th edition the only code that updated is the AASHTO that went from 2010 to 2012. All the others (ACI 318, ACI 530, AISC, ASCE 7, IBC, and NDS) stayed the exact same as the 13th edition! Long time coming for a disappointing book.

Came home tonight to find this on my front porch! I have been waiting not just the last 6 months since I ordered it but since the movie came out way back in 1999.
I looked through it over dinner. Felt like something was missing. I think it was not the best idea to feature so much bad art that was done before Brad Bird came to the project. I also felt like they should have included more of the beautiful background paintings that were done for the film. Also, the color script pages were dark and unclear.
I'm a little disappointed.

Ugh

I was looking forward to this book for a while - I've loved the artistic direction, color and style choices and have used them as references for years. What could be better than a book filled with storyboards, character sheets, colors, environments, etc - all from the movie? Well... that's not quite what this ended up being. The book reads as ... here's a bunch of comp art that we sorta thought was ok, well maybe it sucked - but then this new guy came around and changed the art direction - so now we'll compare what sucked to what doesn't suck - and on and on...

I would have been thrilled with seeing the final movie art direction - not all of their failed attempts before getting it right. The book is basically filled with the art that didn't make it. Can't win them all!

The Art of the Iron Giant - Book Review

The Iron Giant remains one of the most highly-regarded animated movies. It's a beautiful film, and to coincide with the release of the signature edition blu-ray set, Insight Editions has published a book equally as beautiful. The Art of the Iron Giant contains what fans have been waiting for a long time - an in-depth look behind the scenes of the film and it's art department.

The book begins with a foreword by director Brad Bird, who writes about his involvement in the project. The text then discusses the challenges of the film, with focus on the design and animation processes. The artwork in the book varies greatly -- some of it is from a previous incarnation of the film that was planned prior to Bird's involvement; and then obviously the artistic progression into the final visual style you recognize on-screen. Those who know the film will know that it has a unique look which blended a computer generated 3D-character and a traditional 2D environment.

The Iron Giant himself went through various design iterations, and it's fun to see what could have been. Many of the designs are cool-looking, but the final design also gives the character a real personality. Additional chapters show the art of the human characters, as well as the settings in the film (including Hogarth's house and the power plant). Finally, the book concludes with a look back at the legacy of the film and an appreciation of the artists involved in making it a reality. Dozens of team members recall their experiences - including storyboard artists, animators, and composer Michael Kamen.

This is one of those few books that will likely rise greatly in value over time. Sometimes I recommend waiting to buy art books for a few months until the retail price drops and remainder copies go on sale - but in this case I recommend picking this one up as soon as possible because a fresh new copy may be difficult to find down the road (Amazon is already showing a 1-2 month backorder at the time of this review).

Good beginning resource

I taught Latin I for 20+ years in the public school system and stayed frustrated with the texts we were given to use. Now that I'm teaching independently and can choose my own text, I'm going with the Oxford Latin Course. The vocabulary is similar to other texts, but this series gives accessible translations so students can master that important skill early. I'm also pleased that the OLC does not give dull grammar exercises but presents important concepts and gives practice through the cartoons, the translations, etc. The lessons are short and move quickly. The cultural info is also good. Other than wishing for more info on derivatives, I'm enjoying using it to teach Lain 1 students.

Good for a beginner with language background.

I thought this book has been helpful getting me to learn Latin so far. I bought the CD with it to help practice hearing it and get some pronunciations down. If I were a brand new language learner completely, I don't know how helpful this was, but my background in studying German for 9 years helped me understand things like the accusative case and made me pay attention to verb-endings. If you've never studied a foreign language before, I would hesitate to do this alone.

About the Author

DR. DONALD R. CHAMBERS, CAIA, is the Associate Director of Programs at the CAIA Association, the Walter E. Hanson/KPMG Professor of Finance at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, and Chief Investment Officer of Biltmore Capital Advisors. Dr. Chambers previously served as the Director of Alternative Investments at Karpus Investment Management. He is a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Alternative Investments.

DR. MARK J. P. ANSON, CAIA, CFA, CPA, PhD, JD, is a member of the CAIA Board of Directors and the President and Chief Investment Officer of the Bass Family Office—winner of the Family Office of the Year award for 2014–2015. Dr. Anson previously served as President and Executive Director of Investment Services at Nuveen Investments Inc., Chief Executive Officer of both the British Telecom Pension Scheme and its wholly owned asset management company in London, Hermes Pension Management Limited, and Chief Investment Officer at California Public Employees' Retirement System. About the Author
John Hall can still remember the first book he ever read. It was Harry The Dirty Dog. Since that day, he's always loved reading. When he was in fifth grade, he decided he was going to be a writer when he grew up and wrote his first novel, The Mystery of the Leopard's Eyes (unfortunately, it was never published and to this day, still sits in his desk drawer). But years later he did become a published author. John grew up in Brooklyn, with a younger brother and twenty-one cousins (yes, 21!), but now lives in New York City.

Excellent and important reading for all citizens

Finally, someone has put together the information needed to help the US get back to
the principles and ethics that framed this nation. Too long have citizens been subjected
to research, torture, and abuse under the guise of national defense and security.
A very well-researched, well-articulated, and well-informed book!

A Good Overview...

This is a good summary, or general overview of what the hidden fascist PTB are hoping to accomplish in the physical control of the brain-mind and bodily systems. However it is short on the specifics of how they (already) are -("now")- trying to accomplish their evil goal of Ultimate Control. For more details of the various specific "physical mechanisms" that they have (secretly) developed (and are now currently "deploying"), see the following sources: The "Research Library" at www.carnicominstitute. org ; All the pages and links at www.morgellonsexposed. com ; The recent book by Elana Freeland about the covert AEROSOL SPRAYING "PROGRAM"-(the "Chemtrails") titled "...The Full Spectrum Dominance Of The Planet" ; and www.drjudywood. com. As Hall demonstrates with his list of times/events that Citizens HAVE BEEN, in fact, "used" unknowingly as "human guinea pigs", proves that this book/this topic IS NOT mere conspiracy theory, rather it's the opposite -- it IS Conspiracy Fact!
