The best book on Environmental Graphic Design in 25 Years

25 years ago John Follis published the last great book on environmental graphic design. This book is an update and improvement. The book starts with a clear and simple premise that underlies environmental graphics, a pyramid made of three parts (Graphics, hardware, information) The pyramid neatly divides the book into clear areas. Each section literally throws in the kitchen sink, with information on research, codes, guidelines and examples. Even more important are the picture examples. Many designers may come away disappointed if they are expecting a picture book, but the examples (A mix of B+W and color pictures) links closely to the text and lends weight to the content. This is a serious resource book for designers interested in reaching a higher level of design rigor.

Finally a comprehensive signage book!

A great up to date resource for everything having to do with environmental graphics. I see this as a valuable tool for design and architectural businesses as well as real estate developers. It is laid out like a step by step guide to take you through the entire process. The only thing that I found missing was how to come up with the great creative ideas that were featured in the color plates in the book - can we use them?

A persuasive treatise on a pervasive food...

A fun, crammed compendium on how this food became ubiquitous--like the apple in our diet. It's forms and functions are seemingly unending. You'll be surprised how much and in what ways you've consumed it. Stock photos, quotes, recipes, postcards: a loving scrapbook and historical tale of corn. If you're a cook, you'll love it. It's like a year of Gourmet magazine with every issue on a different facet of corn. A fun gift to give.

Well-written, with detailed information on all almost all aspects related to corn

The author is descended from folks who grew corn on the plains, and their story is woven into the start and end of the text. There is a great deal of detail on ritual and traditional uses of corn by Native American peoples, from the Toltecs and Aztecs and Woodland peoples to modern tribes, and especially much on the uses of corn as a food, in fact so much on alternative ways of making some dishes (such as bread-like dishes) in various cultures that many readers would skip over these details. The chapter on the mechanization of corn process also has lots of detail but is hard to follow for those of us who don't know the function of many of the agricultural tools: the author doesn't describe them. Similarly, while the author mentions the six general types of corn (sweet, dent, pop, flour,...), she never explains the differences among them, and there is limited information on corn genetics. The author describes the surprising number of industrial uses for corn in some detail:the book has lots of information on all aspects of corn but some useful details are missing. I was especially interested in the conflicting theories on the ancestry of corn in a section titled The Corn War (at the time of publication, there were theories that teosinte was either not the ancestral grain or not the only one). One error: in the text on Chaco, the author states that Pueblo Bonito housed more than 1000 people; it is now accepted that it housed relatively few. A limitation of this book is that it was published in 1992 and hence has nothing on modern developments related to GMOs. There is an extensive bibliography but few references within the text indicating which sources contain more information on a topic. Of course, a reader can go to the web for a particular topic (such as the types of corn), but it would be useful to have it in the text.

In another reenactment, Thanksgiving Mice! by Bethany Roberts, illus. by Doug Cushman, rodents are the stars. Simple rhyming text and historical basics come together as the Holiday Mice present a play.

reS-Gr 1-The origins of Thanksgiving are explained by a group of mice as they put on a play for their animal friends. Cushman's cheerful spreads show the little creatures using handmade props and putting their all into this neighborhood production. The characters are charming and the colors are vibrant. Where pictures appear in a smaller frame, objects often extend into the borders for visual appeal. The problem comes with the text. Short rhyming stanzas at first seem to offer a pleasing read-aloud pattern, only to dissolve into an odd scheme, and readers may constantly try to recover a poetic balance that isn't there. Another problem comes with fictionalizing the Pilgrims as mice and keeping true to the Thanksgiving account. These diminutive Pilgrims wear clothes, sail on the Mayflower, suffer a hard winter, and plant corn, but that continuity breaks when "They built new homes in tree trunks-" instead of houses. There is a scarcity of Thanksgiving books for this age group that can adequately explain the historical significance of the holiday in very simple terms. Halloween Mice! (Clarion, 1995) by the same duo hit upon a combination of text and pictures that works very well, but it isn't trying to tie in a historical concept. If you aren't overly concerned with an odd poetic structure or a break in the logic of mice as Pilgrims, then this book should fill a gap in read-aloud Thanksgiving material for the younger set.

Ages 3-6. From the writer and illustrator of Christmas Mice! (2000), Halloween Mice! (1995), and Valentine Mice! (1998), here's a Thanksgiving picture book for young children. Thanksgiving is the story within a story here, as interpreted by a group of little costumed mice who are putting on a pageant. The rhymed verse sets an upbeat tone for the action. There's plenty of comic byplay in the watercolor illustrations, which show the furry thespians acting out a very simplified story of the Mayflower voyage, the hardships the Pilgrims endured on land, and the triumph represented by Thanksgiving. The happy--though occasionally hapless--members of the little troupe slosh paint on the stage and knock each other over with bits of scenery, as well as acting out the tale with enthusiasm. Preschool and early elementary grade teachers looking for a short, light introduction to the holiday may want to give this colorful picture book a try. Carolyn Phelan

Disappointing...

Not as cute or informative as I had hoped. I was looking for an age appropriate Thanksgiving story for my 3-year old, but this is defintely more for toddlers than preschoolers. Not quite exciting enough to hold his interest.

Decent holiday fare

This is a pleasant but fairly mediocre Thanksgiving book for young kids. Its premise is that mice are putting on a play about the first thanksgiving. We watch the show and then cheer at the end. The artwork has a few clever moments in it depicting stage hand mice pushing Plymouth rock props into the scene, etc. The text, however, doesn't flow very well. It is told in terse couplets, as if in verse, yet often the verses fail to rhyme - or if they do, we wait a few pages for the rhyme to come. Thus, any readaloud singsong quality which the text is apparently meant to have (and which is the only thing that might compensate for its abruptness) is foiled. Leonardo Barroso is an unscrupulous Mexican oligarch whose fortress of a villa is only a short drive from the "crystal frontier" of the title, and each one of the nine stories comprising this work explores the life of someone touched by him. There's Juan Zamora, whose medical studies at Cornell were made possible by the stratagems of Barroso; the beautiful Michelina from Mexico City, whom Barroso marries; off to his son and then takes as his own, and the working girls of Barroso's maquiladoras, who lust after the gringo male dancers of the clubs. The outrageous racism of Fuentes's Anglo characters, such as Miss Amy Dunbar and border patrol Dan Polonsky, may seem excessive and stereotyped, but it is also hard to deny that such attitudes exist along this troubled border. Fuentes masterfully interweaves Mexican politics, economics, and history within the individual stories, giving a brilliant update on relations between an extremely poor country and the richest in the world. Fuentes has no qualms about using fiction as a vehicle for social analysis. When this union between art and commentary succeeds, it generates indelible scenes of tremendous passion, of which there are many in this set of nine loosely connected stories, but when it fails, Fuentes' tales turn awkward. It may be that Fuentes' immense sense of responsibility toward Mexico and its people--a commitment that compels him to dramatize the entrenched corruption and ferocious poverty that drive so many people across the border--at times simply overwhelms the delicate emotional balance crucial to the magic of a story. That said, these are nonetheless gleaming fables about the volatile and urgent relationship between Mexico and the U.S., unnerving stories rich in metaphor, wit, and remarkable characters, from Don Leonardo Barroso, an ambiguous figure of great wealth and power, to Juan Zamora, who leaves his oppressively poor life in Mexico City to study medicine at Cornell, where he discovers both his homosexuality and his deep compassion. Then there's young, vulnerable Marina, who dreams of seeing the ocean as she works assembling televisions in a factory along the border, and the hero of the haunting title story, Lisandro Chavez, who, along with dozens of other men, is flown into Manhattan to spend a weekend cleaning the inside of a glass skyscraper, the latest high-tech form of migrant labor. Fuentes boldly shines his high beams on "the illusory crystal divider, the glass membrane between Mexico and the U.S.," thus illuminating both our vast differences and our manifold connection. A sardonic ``novel in nine stories'' about relations between the US and Mexico, by the latter country's acclaimed author of such cosmopolitan fictions as Terra Nostra (1976) and The Campaign (1991), among others. Each story portrays a conflict involving a family member, intimate, or business associate of ``the powerful political Leonardo Barroso,'' a deal- and king-maker with a foot in both countries and a shadowy demeanor and personal history. For example, ``A Capital Girl'' traces the emotional vacillations endured by Michelina, an impressionable young woman who idolizes her godfather, Leonardo, as a result accepting marriage to his deeply unstable son Mariano. These and other characters reappear in several stories, a few of which are rather too nakedly discursive (e.g., the wheelchair-bound narrator's monologue in ``The Line of Oblivion,'' and a predictably manic-depressive relationship between a wealthy white matron and her abused Mexican housemaid in ``Girlfriends''). Indeed, most of the stories are too frequently interrupted by ironic commentaries on both American arrogance and myopia and Mexican illiteracy and inertia. However, ``Spoils'' presents a delicious characterization of its protagonist Dionisio, a cooking expert and gourmet explorer of several species of appetites. And in ``Malintzin Las Maquilas''--a lively, sexy story whose sociopolitical content emerges naturally from its character relationships--Fuentes vividly depicts the volatile bonding among three women factory workers. The long (and uneven) climactic story, ``Rio Grande, Rio Bravo,'' explores in too pat a fashion the human and diplomatic ramifications of ``crossing the border,'' and brings the volume to a stagy (if perfectly logical) violent end. A vast improvement over Fuentes's recent self-indulgent metafiction Diana (1995), and a pretty creditable dramatization of the mocking rhyme with which the book leaves us: ``poor Mexico,/poor United States,/so far from God,/so near to one another.'' -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Ambivalent novel long on poetry, short on solutions

Tedious novel in the form of nine linked stories shows Mexican life from multiple angles, none too flattering. The crystal frontier of the title is, of course, the U.S.-Mexican border; what matters here is less the border as geopolitical fact and more its impact on the Mexican psyche. The author aims his barbs at both sides of the border; there's little surprising here except perhaps for the portrayal of a disdainful Mexican upper class that couldn't care less about how the other half lives or whether it lives or starves. Book clubs will find this a useful tool for stirring up discussion on the illegal drug and immigration issues whether they read through to the end or not; those who do will be rewarded with a chapter written half in normal prose and half in surreal fragmentary lines of poetry, the effect of which is not unlike sitting through a Tarkovsky double-feature.

An achingly beautiful, haunting series of interwoven stories...people I know, people I can imagine. Viewing events through the eyes of different people was reminiscent of Kurasawa's Rashomon. As a sucker for short stories, my favorite was the title piece.

For the Language Learner and Below Proficient Reader

Great book to use for additional handouts in class regarding usage, transition, and your basic communication ideas for the writer's workshop. People from other countries do not get idioms like "pass the hat" meaning make a collection of money, for example. It's going to be fun to use this well organized book which has little two page dramas, with characters and a bunch of idoms that carry the dialogue. I haven't used it yet [beginning of the year] but have already zeroxed the first one, two page handout. When I get the class sufficiently managed behaviorally, that is when they know I mean business when I say I'm going to call their parents, I will begin using this stuff.

A decent book, but not my first pick

This book has a lot of information, no doubt about it. And you may find some things in it that you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere (such as non-linear damage theories, fretting, shock and impact, etc). However, the book is quite theoretical, and information is scattered over various chapters, sometimes making it difficult to find what you're looking for. And when you do find it, the information is often not presented in a precise and detailed manner, which is important whenever you attempt to extend theory to real-life problems. I found this to be the case with the strain-based fatigue discussion, and especially the fracture mechanics coverage, which is cursory at best. I recommend that you first check out Dowling's book ("Mechanical Behavior of Materials"). I have found it to be much more useful.

excellent reference for mechanical design

It is a very good book. Gives a broad explanation of failure considerations in the mechanical design process. It is complemented with examples that help to understand. It is a very technical book. Do not expect to pretty color pictures. Math is stated in a sequential way that can be undestood pretty easily. When disscussing a topic recalls some basics before touching partcular details. It is not an introductory book. A book on mechanical of materials would be a excellent complement. Excellent as a reference.

About the Author
Many contemporary authors focus only on the Great Pyramid and consider what might be possible. Charles Rigano focuses on the archaeological record to see where it leads him. He has been studying Old Kingdom architecture for 25 years and his earlier articles on the Bent Pyramid interior, Sneferu's pyramid at Meidum, the small subsidiary pyramid recently uncovered near Khufu's Pyramid, and on pyramid building all provided new insights on these old subjects. His ideas and proposals are in keeping with conventional Egyptological thinking. Charles Rigano spent seven years researching and writing this book. He studied the writings of ancient travelers, what early scientists found when they first entered the pyramids and when they uncovered the monuments, and the works of modern Egyptologists. He combined this research with his own on-site observations to form this complete “picture” of the ancient Giza monuments.

A Passion for Pyramids

Like thousands of others, I am an Egyptophile and have studied ancient Egypt for more than two decades. Some of us first became fascinated by mummies, for others Akhenaten was the lure; but many of us developed a passion for pyramids. This preoccupation led us to read all we could find on the subject, and, for those who were able, to visit the monuments themselves. I wish a book like this had been available twenty years ago!

Charles Rigano’s book on the Pyramids of Giza performs a valuable service by drawing together an immense amount of information from sources ranging from the earliest explorers to the latest archaeological discoveries. I will quote a few numbers to show what an enormous contribution he has made on this popular topic. Among his 222 references are many that are out of print or available only in specialized libraries, while his 400+ endnotes testify to the rigor of his research and allow a curious reader to penetrate further into the primary literature.

Rigano supplements his literature review with first-hand observations – made during a number of extended visits – to provide vivid descriptions and a large number of photographs of seldom-seen areas. His decision to devote an entire 220 page book to the three Giza pyramid complexes was made after his long, and often frustrating, study of the available pyramid books. Even the most comprehensive of these treat the entire Giza group in fewer than 30 pages. There is much, much more to learn about the Giza pyramids, and Rigano both provides more information about each pyramid as well as treating the entire plateau as a coherent funerary site developed over the reigns of three Dynasty IV kings. The book includes information about the subsidiary pyramids, temples and causeways, the Sphinx, and building technology. He also offers new ideas about some outstanding mysteries while staying well within the conventional Egyptological canon as supported by archaeological findings.

Anyone who has seen the pyramids, will want to read this book to better understand their own observations and to see what they have missed. Arm-chair travelers will find everything they could want to know in a concise, readable format illustrated with hundreds of excellent photographs and diagrams. If you only buy one more book about pyramids, this should be the one!!

An informative read on pyramid construction

This book about the Giza pyramid complexes is not so much a how or why description but a more a what was done during the building and investigation of these structures.

You won't read if the stone blocks were moved by slaves, hired help, or aliens. And there isn't much conjecture as to the purpose of say the Queen' s Chamber. But there is a notation that a number of the lower courses of blocks are of a different dimension than those above.

I only gave this book four stars due to its graphics. There needs to be more drawings and the black and white photos can be difficult to understand.

Google's sole mission is to provide the most relevant search results at the top of its searches in the quickest manner possible. However, in recent years, due to some mischievous behavior at the hand of a small group of people, relevancy began to wane.

Since 2011,Google has tried hunt out and demote spammy sites that sacrifice user experience, focus on thin content, or simply spend their time trying to deceive their way to the top of its search results.

SEO in business terms

SEO is a must have for any on-line business or for any area or domain that requires on-line presence. You can't be successful in today's on-line business environment without SEO. This is of course easier said than done, and this is exactly where I believe this book comes in, making SEO understandable for anyone who needs it but doesn't quite get it. I have really enjoyed reading this book mainly because it is not addressed to those with advanced knowledge and skills in this area, and shares the SEO set of concepts in a language that any business person would understand. A helpful guide, a must read for anyone looking to have on-line presence.

The most current SEO Guide

I have been a full time online marketer for many years and the one thing that I have learned that is a constant in this business is that everything changes. The things that were working for me four years ago and last year, probably won't right now. This is why I have to stay up to date on the latest SEO techniques and author R.L. Adams has published a goldmine of current information in his "SEO 2016". With information on what is working today to rank a website in Google based on the current algorithm factors, this is a must-read and I am already making adjustments based on its recommendations.

Fantastic resource for SEO practitioners of all experience levels

“SEO 2016: Learn Search Engine Optimization” is not a book about Web design. R.L. Adams won’t tell you how to create a website that is responsive and mobile-ready, but he does tell you early on how important it is that you ensure you or your Web designer “implements a CSS design structure that will work across devices, and not only across different browsers on the same device.” This is exactly what you should be looking for in a book about SEO – knowledge about what factors in Web design and SEO strategy are important, without going off on a tangent about how to pull off a certain kind of Web design.

“SEO 2016” is a comprehensive book that will provide you everything you need to know about search engine optimization. It is well written, sensibly organized, and most importantly, up to date regarding the latest Google search algorithm updates. Whether you’re just getting your feet wet in SEO or you’re an experienced optimizer looking to expand your knowledge, this book is the perfect resource.
