About the Author
Phil Masters has a degree in Economics from Cambridge University and spent a few years as a computer programmer before somehow becoming a full-time author and occasional editor, specializing in roleplaying games material. He has worked in genres ranging from historical fantasy through superheroes to science fiction, and been allowed to play in a lot of other writers' worlds. He has written or contributed to numerous books for companies including Hero Games (for whom he created Kingdom of Champions), White Wolf (The Artisan's Handbook and The Swashbuckler's Handbook), Atlas Games (Faerie Stories), and Steve Jackson Games (GURPS Arabian Nights, GURPS Places of Mystery, GURPS Atlantis, GURPS Dragons, GURPS Banestorm, and - with Terry Pratchett - The Discworld Roleplaying Game). He is currently line editor for the Transhuman Space hard SF roleplaying setting from the latter company. The author lives in Hertfordshire, UK.

Uninspired writing, magnificent artwork.

Author Phil Masters gives us an "alternate history" or fantasy - perhaps a blend of both - of the history of the wars of Atlantis. This Osprey Adventures title is a typical Osprey product with excellent artwork and illustrations.

First of all, the author sets the stage with his sources, and the founding/geography of Atlantis. Masters gives the reader the story of Poseidon's creation of the island as well as the founding dynasty. The author does a good job of writing about the island itself and the geography - the building of the city and its moats or "rings" and walls. There's a very good section of the government of their civilization and some of their rituals.

The author then records the wars of Atlantis...and here's where the book falls short. The alliance of Atlanteans and Amazons goes on a blitz of the Mediterranean conquering colonizing Italy and conquering Egypt and Asia Minor. Their aggression is stopped by the "proto-Athenians" (this is a term I came to hate, reading it over and over again - couldn't the author have created a mythical name for the ancestors of the Greeks or just called them "Greeks"?) who then lead a coalition of their own in revenge, conquering Atlantis until the gods punish all sides for their arrogance by destroying Atlantis forever.

The wars seem to be too brief and conventional. With the exception of the matriarchal Amazons, it was very conventional and condensed. It seemed like Atlantis was a civilization that popped up, went on the warpath and was utterly defeated in a few short decades - almost paralleling the conflict between Rome and Carthage. Just very uninspired writing. Masters makes a civilization that existed for millennia and reached the heights of culture and power seem like a flash-in-the-pan.

To give credit where credit is due, however, the artwork is excellent - even beautiful. Kudos to artists Jose Daniel Cabrera Pena and Rocio Espin Pinar (sorry I don't know how to make tildas over the n's!) as their marvellous artwork lifts this Osprey title to a three star book!

I wish I had read this book as an undergraduate. After making numerous mistakes and finally stumbling into a great career, I mentor students at my alma mater using many of the themes mentioned in this book.

There is a massive amount of literature written on getting into a good school available for high school students. There is also a considerable amount of literature and self-help books for mid-career professionals. Very little is written on the process between leaving university and finding a career-path employment opportunity. GET TO WORK helps fill that gap.

Students should read this in their freshman year, begin following the processes mentioned in the book during their sophomore year, land and grow from a stellar internship in their junior year, and then coast into full-time employment during their senior year.

It contains mountains of incredible advice for college students of every age or year: the freshman who is looking for his first internship, the sophomore or junior looking to get an even better internship than their first one, and the senior looking to nail down their dream job.

If you've read other guidebooks on getting jobs or internships - and you don't think you need any more advice - think again. This one has something for you (or someone you know). Buy it, read it, learn from it, and live it.

Recommendation when reading: Pay VERY close attention to the Insider Tips. They are usually a couple paragraphs of information, but pack a TON of very, very useful information into those paragraphs.

This text book is good for a brief overview of the topic. It is not in detail. I think a few more solved examples with detailed references to equation would have been good. I general I wouldn't say its one of the best texts I have used. To be honest it is not up to the mark but it isn't that bad either. in short it is slightly above average.

This is a "must have" for any serious student (or professor) of civil engineering hydraulics. It is also one of the most comprehensive books on all topics related to pipeline design. The examples and references are easily understood and even though it was first published over 25 years ago it is still a timeless reference. I have developed state of the art valve sizing and design software based on the equations in this book. I reread it every few years to keep my career on track.

Other reviewers may have been looking for something else but the title is very clear as to what is covered. It's about water distribution pipeline system design.

About the Author

Robin Hard is the author of The Routledge Handbook of Greek Mythology (2003) and the translator and editor of Apollodorus' Library of Greek Mythology (1997) and Diogenes' Sayings and Anecdotes (2012) for Oxford World's Classics, as well as the translator of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations (OWC, 2011), with introduction and notes by Christopher Gill.

Christopher Gill has written extensively on ancient philosophy, especially on Hellenistic and Roman ethics and psychology. He is the editor of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, tr. Robin Hard, for Oxford World's Classics.

Superior to All other Translations Except the Loeb

I have never written a review for amazon but this book is exactly what I have wanted for many years.

There are so many good points that I will will just list them by number.
1. compact other translations are too large the size of the book is perfect to put in a bag or carry along easily when you go on the bus.
2. translation does not have typos - if you have read the English only translation based off of George Long's older one there are so many typos that it is annoying. But this book is proofread and very well done. Also because the other one is public domain you can get some really weird formatted books, but this book is well laid out and easy to read.
3. the translation it self is really good, but I like Oldfather's a little bit more, but that said since I can not read Greek it is nice just having an only English format like in this book.
4. great notes on each Discourse following AA Long nice book where he put many nice ideas about Epictetus's thinking in the translation of just the 1st book, this one follows the lead and there are many great additional notes nicely put at the end of the book instead of on the bottom.

So if you love Epictetus then you will probably love this book. I know I will recommend it highly to all of my friends.

Best translation of Epictetus

Previous translations of Epictetus' Discourses and Enchiridion are stuffy and strange in parts. Robin Hard's translation manages to both preserve the original meanings as well as be very understandable for the contemporary reader.

Reading the Discourses, it's as if you are in Epictetus' philosophical school in Ancient Rome, learning to become a Stoic. If you are interested in Stoicism and potentially living as a Stoic, Epictetus' Discourses -- and this translation specifically -- is the place to get the juicy philosophical ideas in their full glory. Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, while wonderful, does not portray a complete philosophy but only the journal entries of a practitioner. Seneca's letters, while eloquent and wise, are a mix of Stoic and Epicurean thinking and thus sacrifice the purity of hard core Stoicism found in Epictetus.

I highly recommend reading this edition of the Discourses slowly, contemplating their meaning and how you might apply them into your daily life, then using the Handbook as it was intended: as a summary of the key points in the Discourses.

I think it's a great rundown of Stoicism

I read Oxford Press books whenever possible. I think, overall, they have the most accurate yet modern translations.

I suggest reading the "Handbook" portion of the book first, (it's located at the end). I think it's a great rundown of Stoicism. It gives mental exercises, and a kind of brief genealogical of stoic thought. The Discourse portion provides a deeper explanation in essay format.

A real treasure, an intro marketing book with substance

I really like this book. There are around 10 intro marketing textbooks, and they're almost all either (co-)authored by Kotler, or shameless rip-offs of his books.
Hats of to Roger Best for coming up with a book that's truly different. The approach is refreshingly down-to-earth, almost nerdy, including a lot of frameworks for financial or qualitative analysis that would be useful to any marketing manager in his or her daily life. Although it can be used as an introductory marketing textbook, you'll find a lot of material here that you don't find in Kotler and Kotler-clones, so I also recommend it to people who've had an intro marketing course, and who want to move beyond the basics. Likewise, this would be a great book for practicing marketing managers who've been out in the field a couple of years, and want to brush up on the basics, without wading through the usual definitions and useless frameworks in other intro textbooks.
The entire book is in black and white, lacking the usual fancy graphics, and it is only about half the length of other textbooks. I actually find that refreshing, and it is an extension the substance-over-hype approach behind this book.

This is a great book for managers who want to understand marketing better. It is truly customer-focused and performance-oriented. I teach Marketing in EMBA classes in the US and in Switzerland, and the students love this book, together with the applications.

A standard textbook for many Universities

Market based management walks the reader through the basic foundations of marketing. Each chapter takes the reader through examples and explanations of these foundational principals.

Although the text is clear, it feels like it is written by an accountant rather than by someone who writes for a living.

This kindle version was disappointing with ye number of restrictions. Only my iPad was able to read it, and features like dictation were disabled.

For the cost, rent or reselling is a better option.

Well-researched, yet undermined by 2nd portion's lack of focus.

No Logo is a surprisingly well-researched book, if you can get past the obvious contradiction on the front cover and binding of this major-label production. Whether the "All Rights Reserved" copyrighted logo is meant to be ironic or merely obligatory concessions to the publishing house, it still reflects Klein poorly: either as a powerless pawn or else having a bad sense of humor.

Purely on content, however, as all books should be judged, No Logo quickly shows you this is no left-wing, hippie diatribe of over-generalization, with facts shunted to the wayside. Instead, it reads like a well-planned documentary, meticulously annotated and researched. Klein masterfully identifies the root problem of laissez-faire economics, market-oriented policies, and capitalism in general. For those of us who are a bit slow to comprehend the dramatic shift that has taken place in the free-market business world, Klein neatly diagrams the subtle and not-so-subtle shifts the private, for-profit sector of mainstream business has taken in its quest to orient away from developing products and focus on the development of brands. This paradigmatic shift has launched a new era of capitalism, changing it drastically from our predecessors' definition.

Klein maps out the expansion of advertising into all aspects of human life, the lack of "unbranded space", the Borg-like assimilation process that marketing initiates, devouring all niches, reactions, backlashes and resistance. With this process of lifestyle branding and perpetual advertising adaption, Klein shows the effects of this system of separation of brands and products. She details the flood of franchising, corporate mergers, private-sectors profit-maker's censorship, outsourcing, the exploitation of third-world labor, the creation of "McJobs" inside service economies and the growth of temporary labor and permanent "freelancing".

Klein derails, however, in her attempts to document the anti-corporate activist movement. What has been so far a masterful critique of globalization and corporatism focuses instead on grassroots activism and culture jammers. She spends almost one hundred pages describing (without unqualified praise, to her credit) underground rings of vandals and lone "anti-brand" guerrillas who deface corporate advertising by some irrational belief that their actions will persuade mainstream, moderate Westerners to change their consumption habits to ones approved by vigilantes drawing skulls and rewriting logos. If her discussion of them is to document an overall noble and worthy cause (that is, anti-corporate resistance), then addressing culture jammers in anything but a negative light only serves to tarnish an up until now, very polished presentation. Along with eliminating this episode, Klein would do her cause service by eschewing her description of RTS's absurdities in favor of a more detailed assessment of collectives and people's movements, such as the Zapatistas: uprisings that are rooted firmly in the reality of economics and egalitarian living-- rather than the short-term frivolity of dangerous quasi-riots, or the childish response of throwing pies at CEOs.

Klein also fails to precisely pinpoint what exactly her target is. She explains that it is more than attacking branding; it is about citizenship, not consumerism. Neither is it about attacking corporations via purchasing power. She explains much about activists' activities, but by the time she concludes her narrative, she has done little to address what exactly is the goal-- besides her vague wish for "unbranded spaces". The afterword (written in 2002) perhaps provides a better insight into what she was getting at when she talks about egalitarian movements and non-homogenization.

No Logo is an excellent book if one is interested in learning the largely ignored facts about branding, advertising, and labor politics; it is not a very convincing polemic for those skeptical of non-privatized solutions. With the debilitating portrayal of culture jamming and RTS as equals to the more mature approaches of student and political organizations described, No Logo undoes itself in short order; easily dismissed by those of the conservative persuasion. Although Klein does cover the anti-globalization movement with a broad, documentary-style brush, the pages of No Logo lack cynosure towards social cooperative, collective solutions, feeling reactionary more than inspirational.

this book is an excellent read for people trying to understand how modern marketing and branding works. Naomi answers a lot of questions about what brands are, why theyre important, how they work, and the consequences of them. I spent the first 5 chapters absolutely crucified by rage however, as her examples are very familiar.

As I just read this book, it didn't have the same impact it may have in 1999. Klein is almost optimistic about the changes she was seeing. However, 13 years later and addidas is still getting in trouble for using sweatshops to make clothing for the Olympics... Not much has changed. I didn't necessarily agree with her denouncement of advertisements, because in a way it seems a good advertisement is a form of art... but in general I felt pretty sad that we do this to the third world. Its important that we hold corperations responsible for the treatment of their workers in the third world...

fast read fast story good story

i just wish the story was more engulfed more details, more thoughts, more tid bits. It jumps, and gets right to the story and right to the point, yet leaves you handing for the next book. Yes good story, easy read, but I want more, I want to hear more from all the people in the story. It moved to fast.

These books was a great read, I know Dane stole Lynn from his brother out of spite but true love always prevails. With all that said I think Dane care about her so that makes me sad for him, but that' what happens when you play games. My only wish was to see her and Simon get married.

Whoa! Ava is a busy been and with good reason. Ava and her cousin Toni. Its been the two of them for a long time. They move a lot, and its not fair to Toni, but Toni understands. Ava needs to keep moving, trying to stay one step ahead at all times.

They finally settle in New York. Hopefully they will be here the longest, or stay for good. Right now she needs to be at work. She loves animals so the pet store is a great job for her. Things are going well and Ava isn't as worried. So when a guy comes in for a pet she thinks nothing of it, after all he does seem human enough for her.

So when he comes back with another guy to get advice about the new pet, she is nice and helps them out. Never thinks they could be dangerous or vampires. But somehow Ava was wrong. The guys take her and everything moves fast.

Michael and Evan. Vampires. Michael has been looking for Ava. He wants her. Wants to turn her and become a family. Ava wants none of this. Evan doesn't even want it. But he's being forced ad doesn't seem like he wants to tell Michael no. Ava has amazing strength and will power. She never gives up, she is fighting to survive and get away. No matter how bad she gets hurt, she tries and tires and tries. She is just an amazing character.

I freaking loved this book! I've read other books by Nikki, and her writing is out of the park once again! She takes these ideas and turns it into an amazing read. You get hooked quickly and won't want to put it down.

Ummm...yea. I had a hard time coming up with a review for this book. Why? I'm emotionally drained. A book hangover if you will. Now while it took a lot out of me, I must say that there's a giddy side of me that is just gushing with excitement because I've read the Sunshine series and this book is the pre cursor to Sophie's story. We see how it all began. We see the WHY but it isn't justified.

This story is one of survival. Ava, our main character, has the knowledge that there are indeed vampires living among her. Her parents taught her how to block them out of her head. She's so on guard that she moves from place to place. She has an anxiety disorder. Which really made me feel like taking a Xanax myself. It's not that it was reading how an anxiety attack starts, it was what she went through that had my heart pounding, me breathless, and of course I was scared. Michael is a sadistic, cruel monster. He has a twisted way of looking at love. He's followed Ava since she was a little girl, when he first came in contact with her. He always came up empty because he was always a step behind until he finds her in NY. I hate Michael. I don't care about why he is the way he is. Yes, his parents were wrong in what they did. Yes he got his revenge on them but why couldn't that be enough? Maybe because he's a vampire and certain instincts are more fierce than when you're human? Nope. Not buying it. Vampire or not, you have a choice. To do good or do evil. Obviously, he chose evil. And every human he has come into contact with has met an unfortunate end. All except Ava. But she doesn't escape so easily. Not without a daily reminder that she's been infected with his blood. You see what she goes through in the Sunshine books. It was not pretty. If anything it's painful & horrifying.
I want to talk about two characters I left out. One, Evan. I first met him in the Sunshine series and I honestly thought he was a creep. However, I no longer feel that way. Yes, he helped Michael in taking Ava, but he kept telling her they were going to get away from Michael. We learn of Evan's story with his sister Katya. Michael has Evan caught by blood. So of course he has to do what Michael says or else.
*It turned out there were far worse things than death.*
And two, Myles. If I was in love with Myles when I read Sunshine then after reading this story I love him even more. Myles is the epitome of a good vampire. Just the total opposite of Michael. Myles treasures life. Myles is one of my favorite vampires, EVER!! He knows what Michael is capable of and that's why he does what he does.
I am a huge fan of Nikki Rae & her writing. It is raw, unique, horrifying, and beautiful. I was enthralled and enticed into Ava's story. So much so I stayed up into the early morning to see how it ended. Afterwards, it makes you want to go read the Sunshine series all over again!! All I have left to say is, "Well done, Nikki Rae."

I was pleasantly surprised by Animal. It was a great mix of horror and fantasy. The author kept the story going at a fast pace, skillfully limiting flashbacks and exposition of backstory. I appreciated that there were no information dumps and the story’s goal became apparent very early on in the story.

The basic storyline is: Ava, a young woman who is gifted with animals, is abducted, held captive, and tortured by a vampire named Michael who believes they are meant to be together and will stop at nothing to break her and make her his. Evan, another vampire, is forced to help Michael despite Evan’s desire to help Ava.

Both Ava and Evan are characters who evoke sympathy. Ava’s panic attacks are realistic and justified. I didn’t necessarily agree with her strategy for escape, but I could understand it, and I liked that she tried to take matters into her own hands. She never gave up, even when it appeared at times that she had. Evan, although helping Michael, tries to be kind to Ava. He’s a likable character. Michael was a believable villain. His motivations were clear and made sense.

Although the book is listed as urban fantasy, it lacks the kick-ass heroine and extensive worldbuilding that are typical of urban fantasy. I didn’t mind about the heroine–it’s a nice change to see someone vulnerable–and the worldbuilding isn’t relevant to this plot because it takes place in only a few locations in isolation.

The story is told from both first and third person point of view. I didn’t like this because I felt like I was being disconnected from Ava when it switched to Michael, Evan, or Toni’s point of view. Because first person is very intimate, I didn’t want to leave Ava. However, I understand the need for some scenes to be told from other points of view. I think I would have liked it better if the entire book had been written from third person, rather than shifting between the two.

This book is not for squeamish readers. Some parts were scary and bloody. I didn’t mind; in fact I loved those scenes because they were terrifying but not overly sadistic.

If you don’t like cliffhanger endings, you probably won’t like Animal. Some of the plot points are resolved, but not all of them.

I enjoyed reading Animal. I recommend it to readers who like vampire stories with only a hint of potential romance. I give Animal 4.5 stars for fast pacing, excellent characterization, and a different kind of urban fantasy heroine.
