Al-Ghazali and the Qur'an: One Book, Many Meanings (Culture and Civilization in the Middle East), by Martin Whittingham

This book is the first of its kind to focus entirely on the Qur’anic interpretation of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058-1111), a towering figure of Sunni Islam. Martin Whittingham explores both al-Ghazali’s hermeneutical methods and his interpretations of particular Quranic texts, and covers al-Ghazali’s mystical, legal and theological concerns.

Divided into two parts:

  • part one examines al-Ghazali’s legal and Sufi theoretical discussions
  • part two asks how these theories relate to his practice, analysing the only three of al-Ghazali’s works which are centrally concerned with interpreting particular Qur’anic passages: Jawahir al-Qur’an (The Jewels of the Qur’an); Al-Qist as al-mustaqim (The Correct Balance); and Mishkat al-anwar (The Niche for Lights).

Providing a new point of access to the works of al-Ghazali, this book will be welcomed by scholars and students of Islamic studies, religious studies, hermeneutics, and anyone interested in how Muslims understand the Qur’an.

Review

'This is undoubtedly a well-researched book which marks a milestone in the thriving study of al-Ghazali and, more importantly, in the study of classical Muslim hermeneutics.' - SHURUQ NAGUIB, University of Lancaster, UK - Journal of Semitic Studies, vol 54, no 2, August 2009

"By surveying the great variety of approaches found in these works, Whittingham demonstrates that al-Ghazali had neither a consistent hermeneutical theory nor a consistent hermeneutical practice. The great virtue of this book is that examining al-Ghazali's thought through the lens of his Qur'anic hermeneutics demonstrates the inconsistencies in his writings over a uniquely broad array of issues in an accessible way." - Ken Garden, Tufts University; Journal of the American Oriental Society, 130.1 (2010)

A Good Overview
By Wayne Valzania
I think "Toward a Zero Energy Home" provides a good overview of what is going on in the technology side of building. I like the fact that a variety of opinions are presented for the reader on different methods working toward the same goal of building a technically smart, energy efficient living space. Anyone interested in this subject will find numerous other books that should be read as well for a more complete understanding of the topic. This volume, in my opinion, holds its own as one of the books that will contribute to that knowledge and is a worthwhile read.

A bit too generic for my taste...
By Carlos A. Mendoza
While there is nothing inherently wrong with the book (I'm sure it will be exactly what some buyers want) it simply didn't meet my needs. I felt like I was reading a bunch of articles from my Fine Homebuilding magazine (BTW, great magazine).

That is, it covered all sorts of areas, but none of them in enough detail for my liking. In that sense, it is a complete "Guide" to energy self-sufficiency at home.

An excellent book to read before designing your own home.
By Mario Maddalozzo
An excellent book to read before designing your own home.

In fact, before designing your own home, you should probably read 5 or 6 books at least, but I believe this should be the first one you read.
It has practical advise on how to save on utilities bills and making a very healthy home. Although it apply for an eco-view of things, it is not focused on the "tree huggers" crowd. Be ecological as a bonus for saving money.

Great advise in what to aim for and what to avoid.

The Myth of Laziness: America's Top Learning Expert Shows How Kids and Parents Can Become More Productive, by Mel Levine

Dr. Mel Levine shows that neurodevelopmental dysfunctions are often the true cause of perceived laziness in children and offers solutions.

How many times have you heard a teacher say that your child has tremendous potential “if only he'd just apply himself” or “if only she'd work just a little harder”? How often have you said the same thing to your son or daughter? Or perhaps you have a coworker who can't seem to finish anything; his reports are never in on time, or her projects are always behind schedule. No matter what excuses you hear, you suspect that laziness is the real reason for your colleague's low productivity.

Almost no one is actually lazy, says Dr. Mel Levine, author of the #1 national bestseller A Mind at a Time. Low productivity—whether in school or on the job—is almost always caused by a genuine problem, a neuro-developmental dysfunction. Despite this, untold numbers of people have been stigmatized by unfair accusations of laziness, many of them adults who still carry emotional scars from their school days.

In The Myth of Laziness Dr. Levine shows how we can spot the neurodevelopmental dysfunctions that may cause “output failure,” as he calls it, whether in school or in the workplace. Dr. Levine identifies seven forms of dysfunction that obstruct output. Drawing on his years of clinical experience he describes eight people—children, adolescents, and adults—he has worked with who exhibited one or another of these problems. He shows how identifying the problem can make all the difference, leading to a course of corrective action rather than to accusations of laziness and moral failure. For example, a child who is unable to plan or to think ahead, who cannot consider different methods of accomplishing something or has difficulty making choices may wait until it is too late to complete an assignment or may act impulsively, creating a pattern of bad judgments and careless errors. Dr. Levine explains how such a child can be helped to learn how to plan ahead and weigh various alternatives. This sort of problem, if untreated, can persist into adulthood, where it can wreak far more havoc than in the classroom.

The Myth of Laziness explains the significance of writing as a key barometer of productivity during the school years. Because writing brings together so many neurodevelopmental functions—such as memory, motor control, organization, and verbalization of ideas—it can provide crucial clues to pinpoint the sources of output failure.

With its practical advice and its compassionate tone, The Myth of Laziness shows parents how to nurture their children's strengths and improve their classroom productivity. Most important, it shows how correcting these problems in childhood will help children live a fulfilling and productive adult life.

Amazon.com Review
A professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Medical School, Mel Levine received acclaim for his previous book, A Mind at a Time, which argued that children’s different learning capabilities demand diverse teaching strategies. In The Myth of Laziness, Levine isolates another group of kids--so-called "lazy" children who aren’t working up to their potential in school--and explores the causes of their low performance. Levine scoffs at the perception that any child is lazy, stating that "everybody yearns to be productive." These children, according to Levine, are simply experiencing "output failure" due to different neuro-developmental weaknesses.

Levine produces case studies of seven children and adults who have been labeled lazy and identifies internal sources that are undermining their production. Many of their output issues revolve around difficulties with writing, as is the case with Russell, who is hindered by his low motor skills, or Clint, whose long-term memory lapses prevent him from expressing himself well. Other weaknesses, such as poor oral language ability, mental energy dysfunction, poor idea generation, and organizational problems, plague the individuals in these case studies. Levine talks briefly about external factors that contribute to low output, such as socioeconomic background, family life, and negative role models. In the profile for Scott Murray, Levine even has the humility to admit that he was unable to reach this young man. External influences--namely, Scott’s privileged upbringing--were too pervasive in causing his output failure.

The last few chapters are devoted to suggestions for what parents and teachers can do to foster productive output in their children and students and how to detect a problem that is internal rather than environmental. Tips on how to cultivate writing skills, set up an organized home office, and assist with homework are aimed at parents while teachers are encouraged to consider individuality among their students’ learning styles. Finally, the appendices offer two worksheets to help students plan stories and reports. Two additional worksheets help pinpoint whether output problems are the cause of poor schoolwork. This is a valuable book that will give parents some guidance in solving their children’s productivity issues and preparing their children successfully for adulthood. --Cristina Vaamonde

From Publishers Weekly
Pediatrician Levine, a developmental-behavioral expert, offers theories on why it's so hard for some teenagers-even bright ones-to succeed in school. "Often these individuals absorb and process information well; they learn but they don't produce," he says, adding, "people say glibly that they are not `living up to their potential.' " Levine prefers the term "output failure" over "laziness." In a series of case studies, he discusses the biological, neurological and psychological factors that may be responsible for "output failure." He focuses on kids challenged by oral and written communication; he believes parents and educators must pay attention to different learning styles rather than simply label a child as lazy. Even fidgeting, according to Levine, may be a plus: "Isn't it odd that kids get criticized for being fidgety when they should be commended for implementing a strategy that significantly elevates their attention?" Despite the thought-provoking theories and discussions of problems such as impairment in the generation of ideas and memory difficulties, only the final chapter, "Cultivating and Restoring Output," offers a broad range of strategies that can be used to remedy such troubles. Still, the advice-e.g., create a home office for kids, document time spent and level of output, adjust expectations-is on target and should help struggling parents.

Auditory Processing Disorder Must Read!
By valleystationgirl
Anyone that is a parent of a child that has the daily battle of learning with an auditory processing disorder needs to read this book and educate themselves on the battle that these children fight daily to produce "average" results in the classroom. So very happy that my son's audiologist enlightened me to this author and the view into how my sons' brain works. This has been so helpful in knowing how to explain to teachers, administrators and even learning consultants on exactly what they are dealing with when working to help educate my son.

Productive Reading
By Deborah Kelly
Even some of the best-informed educators lose objectivity in the classroom. Similarly, parents wonder what is really happening there, having to rely on the teacher's analysis and the child's rendition. With all of this potential confusion comes a mistake easily made and painful to undergo: labeling a bright but differently wired student "lazy". This book clears the air, reminds the adults to steer away from blame and coercion and adhere instead to productive strategies that will help a child learn in her own way.

The book is particularly useful to adults who work with children whose most pressing obstacle is low output of school work. Here are strategies for improving productivity through self-tracking...the student can track his own progress in producing more completed assignments, for example, which relocates accountability and satisfaction where it belongs: with the student. Many strategies to attain improved output are presented and are generally practical, which is a breath of fresh air to all concerned.

This is especially helpful if read following Mel Levine's "A Mind at a Time". For secondary and college age students, "Learning Outside the Lines", by Joathan Mooney and David Cole should take its place immediately on the reading list.

A possibly life-changing book
By K Trimbach
As a contrarian, I was attracted by the title of this book. It was *fantastic*! The author is a neuro-developmental pediatrician who specializes in diagnosing the neurological breakdowns that cause some otherwise smart kids to have "output failure" making them appear "lazy". In a series of composite studies, he describes the kind of neurological breakdowns that can happen, their consequences and some practical ways to handle them.
The range of composite studies include the following:
- lack of coordination and stunting one child's writing ability,
- low mental energy in another (and her father), and
- the lack of creativity by an otherwise high-producing student.

This should be required reading for every schoolteacher in America! Highly recommended!

Review

From the reviews:

"...There are interesting and non-standard topics that are not usually included in a first course in measture-theoretic probability including Markov Chains and MCMC, the bootstrap, limit theorems for martingales and mixing sequences, Brownian motion and Markov processes. The material is well-suported with many end-of-chapter problems." D.L. McLeish for Short Book Reviews of the ISI, December 2006

"The reader sees not only how measure theory is used to develop probability theory, but also how probability theory is used in applications. … The discourse is delivered in a theorem proof format and thus is better suited for classroom … . The authors prose is generally well thought out … . will make an attractive choice for a two-semester course on measure and probability, or as a second course for students with a semester of measure or probability theory under their belt." (Peter C. Kiessler, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Vol. 102 (479), 2007)

"The book is a well written self-contained textbook on measure and probability theory. It consists of 18 chapters. Every chapter contains many well chosen examples and ends with several problems related to the earlier developed theory (some with hints). … At the very end of the book there is an appendix collecting necessary facts from set theory, calculus and metric spaces. The authors suggest a few possibilities on how to use their book." (Kazimierz Musial, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1125 (2), 2008)

"The title of the book consists of the names of its two basic parts. The book’s third part is comprised of some special topics from probability theory. … The authors suggest using the book in two-semester graduate programs in statistics or a one-semester seminar on special topics. The material of the book is standard … is clear, comprehensive and ‘without being intimidating’." (Rimas NorvaiÅ¡a, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2007 f)

"Probabilists have a special relationship to measure theory. … The style of writing is clear and precise … . Its wide range of topics and results makes Measure Theory and Probability Theory not only a splendid textbook but also a nice addition to any probabilist’s reference library. … a researcher in need of a reference work, or just somebody who wants to learn some measure theory to lighten up your life, Measure Theory and Probability Theory is an excellent text that I highly recommend." (Peter Olofsson, SIAM Review, Vol. 49 (3), 2007)

From the Back Cover

This is a graduate level textbook on measure theory and probability theory. The book can be used as a text for a two semester sequence of courses in measure theory and probability theory, with an option to include supplemental material on stochastic processes and special topics. It is intended primarily for first year Ph.D. students in mathematics and statistics although mathematically advanced students from engineering and economics would also find the book useful. Prerequisites are kept to the minimal level of an understanding of basic real analysis concepts such as limits, continuity, differentiability, Riemann integration, and convergence of sequences and series. A review of this material is included in the appendix.

The book starts with an informal introduction that provides some heuristics into the abstract concepts of measure and integration theory, which are then rigorously developed. The first part of the book can be used for a standard real analysis course for both mathematics and statistics Ph.D. students as it provides full coverage of topics such as the construction of Lebesgue-Stieltjes measures on real line and Euclidean spaces, the basic convergence theorems, L^p spaces, signed measures, Radon-Nikodym theorem, Lebesgue's decomposition theorem and the fundamental theorem of Lebesgue integration on R, product spaces and product measures, and Fubini-Tonelli theorems. It also provides an elementary introduction to Banach and Hilbert spaces, convolutions, Fourier series and Fourier and Plancherel transforms. Thus part I would be particularly useful for students in a typical Statistics Ph.D. program if a separate course on real analysis is not a standard requirement.

Part II (chapters 6-13) provides full coverage of standard graduate level probability theory. It starts with Kolmogorov's probability model and Kolmogorov's existence theorem. It then treats thoroughly the laws of large numbers including renewal theory and ergodic theorems with applications and then weak convergence of probability distributions, characteristic functions, the Levy-Cramer continuity theorem and the central limit theorem as well as stable laws. It ends with conditional expectations and conditional probability, and an introduction to the theory of discrete time martingales.

Part III (chapters 14-18) provides a modest coverage of discrete time Markov chains with countable and general state spaces, MCMC, continuous time discrete space jump Markov processes, Brownian motion, mixing sequences, bootstrap methods, and branching processes. It could be used for a topics/seminar course or as an introduction to stochastic processes.

Good Book But ...
By Yan Zhu
This is a good book. And the authors try to summary the measure theory and probability theory into one book. Benefit of doing this is easy to see relationship between the two theories more clearly than reading one for each topic. However, I should say that no book trying to do this job is successful, including this one. To my experience, better understand of real analysis is necessary. If you do not, I think this book is not suitable for you. If you do, you can start the book from chapter 6 and treat the 1-5 chapter as a good reference.

Moreover, the statements in this book are quite concise and I like this style. However, this is a quite new one. There are pretty much typos in the book. I expect that the second edition will be much better than this one.

Another Excellent Probability Theory Book
By Gary Bowers
There are many choices to make when studying graduate probability theory. There are the classics such as Billingsley, Shiryaev, and Dudley which belong in everyone's library. However, this recently renewed volume by Athreya and Lahiri can be a very useful alternative.

Measure, Integration, Product Spaces, Limit Laws, and so on are all covered in the early chapters. However, Characteristic Functions are covered particularly well, and many useful results can be found here. Discrete parameter Martingales are particularly well done, and well crafted proofs of results such as the Vitali theorem are available for reference.

Some of the advanced topics include the Markov Chain Monte Carlo for simulation enthusiasts, a chapter on Brownian motion ending with option pricing is included for those in finance, and a chapter on the bootstrap is also included for further reference. Surprisingly, the Galton-Watson branching process is actually the last topic in the book, but it is treated in the context of martingales.

This is another excellent Springer Statistics Text, by two leading probability theorists. I recommend it to all. Please note that as of 2010 this volume is only available in paperback.

Graduate Measure Theory with Statistical Applications
By Patrick Thompson
This is an excellent graduate level book on Measure and Probability Theory! The book to me seems student friendly! Of course measure theory is not an easy subject and you will never find an easy book on the subject. Some how I find myself flipping through the pages of this book many times during my times of boredom. I don't know how to do all the problems in the book, but I would love to learn how to. This book is one of the best books in my eyes on Advanced Probability. I recommend it to any professor to use for their courses in measure theoretic probability.

A History of Our Time: Readings on Postwar America, by William H. Chafe, Harvard Sitkoff

This popular and comprehensive anthology presents cogent, provocative articles from differing political perspectives on major issues in post-War America. In addition to articles by leading historians, the editors have assembled first-person accounts of various issues by those who have contributed to the shaping of America's rich history, including Joseph McCarthy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Bill Clinton. This fifth edition has been considerably revised to incorporate up-to-date articles on the most significant issues facing contemporary America, including essays on affirmative action, Generation X, and the crises of post-Cold War foreign policy. With lively and enlightening introductions to each section and headnotes providing a context for the articles, A History of Our Time helps students make sense of the past fifty years in America's sometimes tumultuous but always fascinating history.

Valuable Resource
By nga423
In this anthology, Chafe and Sitkoff have collected a number of articles that are critical in understanding the major issues in American history during the past 50 years. Despite the broad thematic scope of essays--ranging from post-war foreign policy to the creation of an "urban underclass" during the Reagan administration--the organization and careful editing of the book provide the reader with a clear understanding of America's recent sociopolitical transitions. The lucid and well-written individual essays, submitted by leading historians and well-known political figures, work particularly well alongside the documents and commentaries they are paired with.
