About the Author
Keith Oatley is Director of the Cognitive Science Program, University of Toronto. He is the author of more than 130 scholarly articles and seven books, including Emotions: A Brief History (Blackwell, 2004), and two novels.

Dacher Keltner is professor of psychology at University of California at Berkeley, and the author of more than 80 scholarly articles and one book. He received the 2000 Templeton Positive Psychology Prize for Excellence in Research, and two university-wide teaching awards at UC Berkeley.

Jennifer M. Jenkins is Professor in the Department of Human Development and Applied Psychology at the University of Toronto. She is co-editor, with Keith Oatley, of Human Emotions: A Reader (Blackwell, 1998). She now heads a large research project on gene-environment interactions in children.

Decent textbook

While it had what I needed, it was very dry for a text. It was useful, but could have included more first hand research and data - I definitely expected more from such a large psych text.

About the Author

Professor Richard Stanley is one of the most well-known algebraic combinatorists in the world. He is currently professor of Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Amongst his several visiting professorships, Stanley has received numerous awards including the George Polya Prize in Applied Combinatorics, Guggenheim Fellowship, admission to both the American Academy and National Academies of Sciences, Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition, Rolf Schock Prize in Mathematics, Senior Scholar at Clay Mathematics Institute, Aisenstadt Chair, Honorary Doctor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo, and an honorary professorship at the Nankai University. Professor Stanley has had over 50 doctoral students and is well known for his excellent teaching skills. Stanley’s list of publications amount to over 155.

In an alternate history of modern American life from 1890 to 1927, Leach (History/Columbia; True Love and Perfect Union, 1980) offers an encompassing, learned, and fast-paced account of how entrepreneurs, manufacturers, bankers, clergymen, and government leaders produced a culture of consumers--as well as the rituals, morality, aesthetics, and institutions that identify the good with the goodies, acquisition with virtue. Innovative merchandising--initiated by the great department stores of the 1890's (Wanamaker's, Marshall Field, etc.) and extending in time to hotels, banks, public utilities, service industries, etc.--began with an excess of production: superfluous pianos, lamps, rugs, cheap jewelry, and food. To dispense with the surplus, merchant princes developed a technology of enticement, the arts of display--including posters, outdoor signs, light, color, glass, window trimming, packaging, catalogues, architecture, and, ultimately, an urban geography with entire shopping districts (epitomized in Manhattan in the showmanship of Times Square, the retail establishments of Fifth Avenue, the fashion and garment districts, and on Wall Street, the source of the financing). Beyond the visual were the rituals--holiday seasons, pageants, parades, children's culture--and the escalators and credit-granting through which department stores became democratized. Americans' getting and spending produced a standardization of taste and beauty, as well as colleges for business and design, fashion magazines, hotel chains, and intermediaries--brokers and agencies for everything from models to real estate. In 1932, Herbert Hoover's Department of Commerce and its imposing building in Washington made merchandising part of government--incarnating, as Leach sees it, the ethics and fantasies embodied in the Emerald City of The Wizard of Oz (L. A Great Book

I don't think I've read a better non-fiction work. The prodigious research is presented in a continuously diverting way. The evolution of Salesmanship in its many forms is explored in colorful depth: floor design, window design (Who knew that until the 1930s "all the show windows at Marshall Field's were covered on Sundays out of respect" for the founder's religiosity?), classified ads, mail-order catalogues. The paradigmatic figure of John Wanamaker is presented vividly and multi-dimensionally; anecdotal details along the way illuminate a whole period of American history I'd paid only scant attention to before. Thank you Mr. Leach, you've started a whole new reading list for me! In fact, my only criticism of the book is the lack of a bibliography. There are book (and journal and letter and interview) references among the copious footnotes, but no single list. The research Mr. Leach did is obviously staggering. How many of us have read "The Dry Goods Economist" or "The Show Window" - the latter founded and edited by L. Frank Baum -? This is a work animated by both a dedication to the highest principles of scholarship, and a passion for the subject that is (in my case at least) contagious.

I found Leach's book very insightful and interesting. He thoroughly dissects and explains the history and creation of consumer culture in the U. S. during the 1880s-1920s. Every avenue involved in consumer culture is discussed in this easy to read text.

About the Author

James Eckler is the Architecture Program Director of the Marywood University School of Architecture. He coordinates, develops, and teaches both the first-year foundation design and the digital media curriculum. In addition to teaching, Professor Eckler is actively engaged in research concerning the culture of place in the urban environment and architecture's role in the development of community.

Great blueprint for the foundation of the beginning design student

I have been teaching architecture and interior architecture for since 2002 and this book elegantly conveys the foundation language needed for the beginning design student and should become one of those books that you never want to sell after leaving school. This book should also be reviewed by professional architects and designers every so often to remind themselves that even real design commissions should start with strong concepts.

The breakdown of the book is well organized and introduces basic vocabulary needed to describe . Photographs of student work at various architecture programs compliment the written descriptions, offering a better visual of the descriptions.

About the Author
Jenny Peters is one part of the sister duo responsible for 21 Songs in 6 Days. She stumbled upon the ukulele after finding 45 of them in one of her elementary school classrooms. Convinced she could turn her find into more than a whole lot of noise, she designed a program to teach all of her students to play successfully with only 30 minutes of class time a week. No one was more grateful than the teacher in the next classroom. A former private piano teacher in Chicago with a Masters in Piano Performance from the University of Illinois, Jenny now lives in Highland Park. Married with three kids, she shares her home with three cats and more musical instruments than she would care to name. Rebecca Bogart is the second half of the sister writing team. An acclaimed classical pianist, performer and teacher, Rebecca has been passionate about the piano and music her entire life. She has played for audiences in Italy, taught master classes at Harvard and won more than a few piano competitions. She made her solo debut at Carnegie Hall in early 2014. Old Dogs, New Tricks

I'm 80 years in April and wondering just why, at my age I'm attempting to play a uke? It is one of those things to do that
came out of my bucket list to do before it's too late! What with stiff fingers with arthritis and fat fingers, I
really thought I would never last through the beginning stages. However, I found that with an ounce of tenacity
and looking forward to playing something I could sing with, I opened your uke book and began. I was delighted
to my satisfaction to learn chords on an immediate bases and was able to sing a simple tune before my fingers
gave in for the first lesson! This is "amazing" as you kids say, and it truly is. I like adding one thing at a time
and using a beginners book that is easy to read with a warm, light conversational style.

Makes Learning the ukulele easy and fun

Our friend Jenny Peters told my wife, Carla, that she was writing a book on how to play the ukulele. She added that she was looking for people who liked music, but did not have a musical background who would test her approach.

Knowing that my formal music training ended in the first grade, that I had made limited attempts, using self-help books, to learn to play the piano and guitar, both ending in frustration, Carla said something like "I have just the musical dumbbell for you."

I like to sing. I have a very rudimentary ability to read music and I would really like to play an instrument, but I was not going to make a long term investment in expensive lessons that tie me to a regular schedule.

I love this program.

The videos and accompanying sound tracks are much more understandable than simply reading text-you get that too-and they give me a standard to compare myself to. When Jenny said her grade school students learned with only one lesson a week, and most didn't have ukuleles at home to practice on, I was hooked.

The instructions are understandable to beginners with little or no musical background. My past attempts to learn an instrument required tons of wasted time looking up terminology that wasn't familiar to me.

They are progressive, going from easy songs to harder ones, and you can advance at your own pace.

The approach is comprehensive, even giving you information on how to buy a ukulele. I bought mine online and bought some accessories at a local music store. In both cases I was comfortable that I knew what I was doing. I have an engineering and financial background, so you can imagine my normal approach to making purchases.

Did I mention it's affordable?

And it works! My grandkids are impressed.

I hate to be the dissenting voice but this did not work for me at all. This is partially my fault, as I didn't review the book description carefully enough and as a result I didn't realize that MOST of the useful content would come via daily e-mails. I found this process tedious and also then it made it impossible to work ahead if I had a chunk of time. I spend enough time checking e-mail, I don't want to have to check my e-mail to get my lesson or review an old one. This is supposed to be fun. I think there are much better ways to do this. Also, the placement of the camera so far away from the players made it difficult to see the fretwork/strumming. So yes, it is absolutely my fault for not reviewing the information closely enough but for those considering a purchase, if you travel a lot, don't want to have to check your e-mail everyday for the next lesson or to review one you already completed, then keep that in mind when making your selection.
