About the Author
David Moore, Director at the School for F.M. Alexander Studies in Melbourne, graduated from Australia's first Alexander technique training course in Sydney in 1985. In 1999 he set up an accredited Alexander Technique teacher training course in Melbourne which offers and Advanced Diploma in Alexander Technique Teaching and a Diploma in Alexander Yoga. Prior to studying the Alexander technique David did many years of yoga practice. He spent over seven years in India and Thailand, including over two years in Thai meditation monasteries, and two years in Madras studying at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandaram with TKV Desikatchar and his teachers. In Sydney he studied Iyengar yoga for four years with Martin Jackson from 1991 - 1994, including undertaking a teacher training course with Martin in 1994. He now teaches classes applying the Alexander technique to yoga. He also has a strong interest in voice work, and has run numerous classes and workshops for singers, storytellers and public speakers. David travels extensively to run courses and workshops throughout Australia and internationally focusing on the application ofthe Alexander Technique to yoga and mindfulness practice.

Insightful, common sense approach to yoga (and life)

This is an excellent book. It provides the flexibility to adapt to our own needs rather than having to sign up for dogma just to get the benefits of yoga.
For example, "Our first priority is always on coordination rather than flexibility."
What he is saying here is that maintaining balance and coordination gets better results than just trying to match the pretzel of the person next to you.
Other examples of this 'intelligent practice' approach are: "There is no yoga pose that suits everybody" and "If you cannot remain in the pose with a free neck, you should immediately come out of it."
David Moore offers us a 'middle way' approach with his book. He explains key ideas and poses in clear, short explanations. The book is broken into 45 easy-to-read chapters with illustrations.
A valuable approach and an impressive effort.

Well written and illustrated book about yoga and about the Alexander technique.
The author has a wealth of experience in both fields and has been working on ways to integrate them. He has used both yoga and the Alexander technique to help some of the spinal conditions he has suffered from and this, together with his considerable teaching experience has lead him to explore the yoga poses in a different way than is commonly taught at the moment.
If you have no experience of the Alexander technique, this may give you an overview which might lead to further exploration.
If you enjoy yoga but have tendencies towards strain or injury in the practice, this book might be one of the resources to help explore the practice in a safer and more enjoyable way.
