One of the first comprehensive texts on Arab Public Health

Public Health in the Arab World edited by Samer Jabbour, Rita Giacaman, Marwan Khawaja, Iman Nuwayhid, and Rouham Yamout (Cambridge Press, 2012) is a major contribution to Public Health in the Arab World. One of the problems we face is a lack of accessible and accurate health data in the region. This book begins the difficult job of trying to collect health data across the Arab world. But it would be wrong to call it just a compendium of data; it is rather quite a comprehensive discourse on concepts and problems to be addressed in Public Health in the Arab world. It is designed for health professionals, but highly readable.
The discussions are honest, thoughtful, and professional (not rhetoric) and they bravely address many sensitive issues. The text spans a full gamut of health topics, utilizing some 86 other qualified contributors including physicians (MDs), PhDs, Public Health experts (with MPH and doctoral degrees), social scientists, and others. Their text covers economic, demographic, political, and social determinants of health. The topics range from gender disparities and women's health; to infectious, chronic, and non-communicable diseases; nutrition, substance abuse, mental health, age specific issues for children, youth and the elderly, worker health and workplace hazards, migrants and refugees, health care delivery, empowerment and community participation, crises, conflict and war; and social reform and health rights to name some of the major topics. They provide numerous case studies, well organized tables of information, well-referenced articles with bibliographic sources, useful graphics, and quality discussions. There is nothing remotely like this on this region in English concerning Public Health. This is a foundation to build on. I will be using this text in future classes and I give it my highest marks.
